Mumbai: Renowned Konkani actor Edwin Banz no more

Mumbai, Mar 23: Renowned Konkani theatre actor Edwin Banz passed away at his residence in 4 Bungalows, Andheri in Mumbai on Monday March 23 morning. He was 66.

Edwin Banz originally hailed from Sastan of Udupi district. He had migrated to Mumbai for work during his youth days and lived there ever since.

Banz, a seasoned actor had acted in several Konkani dramas since 1975 including 60 shows of 'Mhataro Chorbela' of Francis Fernandes Cascia. The famous drama was staged in various parts of the globe. The character of Banz in the drama was well appreciated.

Banz is survived by his wife Cecelia, son Malcolm and daughter Melanie.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 25.

    Few months back Mr.Edwin Banz called me by mistake as he was looking for some other person sharing my name. But my surprise he recognised me and started appreciating my konkani articles in konkani weeklies. Then he continued talking with me for long as if he knew me for many years. No doubt, I have seen his many dramas including his latest drama "Esthel Konachi vokhal?" I feel konkani community has lost a renowned konkani artist and thorough gentleman. May his soul rest in peace.

    Although I was receiving s regularly about his health from Francisab (Fernandes), it pained me no end when I got the news of his eventual passing away.
    Since I knew him closely, I wish to add a few memories of late 70’s here which are very personal. First, he had been a gentleman, a ‘style guru’ a 'fitness freak', never missed his workouts, even during stringent drama practice sessions. We acted together in Baptist Mendonca’s (BAMS) seven shows of ‘Tisri Bail’ in which I played the main role of Professor James, Bams played the ‘Botler’ and he the super handsome hero, Ruby. He used to come in freak out T-Shirts for each rehearsal. He also acted in my drama ‘Tambdo Mankod’ at St Mary’s Mazgaon in 1979, which were glorious days of Konkani theater.
    He was a man of the masses, a perfect PRO, hence when Late Maurice Cabral launched ‘Sankoll’ Konkani monthly under my editorship, we appointed him our PRO and he brought in more than 500 subscriptions, besides advts, all alone.
    When we met after almost 25 years last year during Daiji Dubai anniversary in Mumbai, he told me on my face – “Tum adlo Hemacharya nahim, tum atam vhod monis” (you’re not the same person), and then he laughed in his own style – he he he......
    He was so genuine so upfront, never minced words while talking his heart out. Miss you Eddie.

    Eddie got his break when Fr. Edwin Pinto was a Parish Priest in Sastan during late 1960's. As a parishioner I had a privileged to act with him then. Eddie was a talented and a gifted person. Our condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.

    Late Edwin was living next door of my house at Vikroli. His very first acting was in Bauthus Perira's drama played at Mazagoan with Francis Fernandes in 1976. Later Francis took him in his dramas. I convey my condolences to his brother Fr. Rocky at Bycalla and his another brother and sister with whom I have no contacts now for the last 40 years.

    One of the finest actor of Konkani plays and popular face in Mumbai's Konkani theater. I had a great privilege to perform with him in Mogachi Deswatt, Kazara Upratnth etc. in Mumbai and in Mangalore in late 80's. His roles in Nimani Zadthi and Avoichin Dhukahn exceptional...A great and helpful gentleman. May his soul rest in eternal peace....
