Chikmagalur: Three workers die at erstwhile KIOCL site

Chikkamagaluru, Mar 23: On Sunday March 22, three workers lost their lives while four others suffered serious injuries after a huge iron beam and iron rods came crashing on them when dismantling work of mining equipment belonging to Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL) was in progress.

The deceased have been identified as Shankar (35), Kunder (30), and Sunil (40), all from Bihar. The injured were admitted into the government hospital at Kalasa.

As KIOCL failed to convince the government and the courts to permit it to resume mining operations near Malleshwara in the district, the company has begun the work of dismantling of equipment, machinery, etc, besides demolition of its buildings, as they are no more in use. This work has been given on contract to a Tamil Nadu-based company.

It is said that huge iron beam and rods came crashing on the workers who were dismantling them, on Sunday. Officials of different departments visited the site and collected details of the tragedy.
