Udupi: Animal sacrifice officially banned at Kaup Suggi Maripuja

Udupi, Mar 23: A day ahead of the Suggi Maripuja car festival that is to begin in Kaup, the Udupi district administration, the state government and Animal Welfare Board on Monday March 23 issued ban orders on the traditional ritual of animal sacrifice that has been a norm since years.

The order comes in the wake of a similar decision taken by the Karnataka high court.

The state high court had earlier ordered both the district deputy commissioner (DC) and the superintendent of police (SP) to strictly ensure that animal sacrifice does not take place during the annual Suggi Maripuje being held at Kaup Marigudi from March 24 onwards. The single judge bench of the HC presided over by Justice K L Manjunath issued orders to the officials to take precautionary measures to see that animals are not given as sacrificial offerings during this festival.

The HC issued the order after considering a public interest petition filed on the subject by a local advocate Alevoor Premaraj Kini. The petitioner had pointed out that Karnataka Animal Sacrifice Prohibition Act, 1959 has banned all kinds of animal sacrifices. "Still, at Hale Marigudi, Hosa Marigudi, and Moorane Marigudi shrines at Kaup, every year scores of animals like hens, sheep, and other animals are slain during the annual Maripuje, and law is being violated," explained advocate for the petitioner Sachin before the bench.

The issue had been mooted by deputy director of animal husbandry department Dr Prabhulingu in a meeting at Kaup police station, in the presence of tahsildar Guruprasad, Karkala DySP Vinay Nayak, Kaup circle inspector Sunil Naik, and heads of the three Marigudi shrines of Kaup.

The district administration's order states that it is a violation of law to sacrifice animals in the name of god and religion. "It is an extremely cruel, inhuman and unscientific practice. It is also a reason for the spread of communicable diseases," the order signed by Udupi DC Dr R Vishal states.

"Hence, under the Karnataka Animal Sacrifice Prohibition Act, 1959, animal sacrifice was completely banned (at places of public religious worship or adoration). Hence, in no context can an animal be sacrificed, or its body parts offered/exhibited/thrown or be sold or cooked or blood let out in public places," the order states.

Under the Act, any person, temple official, worker, member, priest or office-bearers who violates the ban can be taken into custody by the police without warrant. If proved guilty, the person may be sentenced up to six months in jail or fine up to Rs 500, or both.

Reacting to the development, old Marigudi temple treasurer said that it is not right to ban a religious ritual that has been practiced since centuries. The district administration should withdraw its order, he urged.

I guess you haven't read your bible, here's a verse from the bible supporting animal sacrifice, "And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh" Deuteronomy 12:27, There are several such verses and there are laws about how animal sacrifices are to be done read the book of Leviticus, it looks like God at one point demanded animal sacrifices.

Dear Mack, Just because it is written in holy books doesn't make it indisputable!. What was relevant 1000's of years ago is not relevant today. We cannot move forward if we hang on to something that is buried in the past. That was a different period and today's has no connection to that!. Are we doing animal sacrifice in church just because it is there in Bible!?. Is the Lord not listening to our peaceful prayers!?

As ritual, animals are sacrificed to appease God and in some cases animal blood is offered to please Demons (certain cults & black magic) Ban slaughtering of animals totally. Either ritual or Demonic purpose.

Dear Rafiq, Let any place of worship be only for peaceful prayers and not for violence. The world is going in one direction and we are going in other direction!. I am reminded of a reply by Haryana Husbandry minister when asked why beef is being banned and his reply was 'Just because some people say it is their food, we cannot allow our sentiments to be hurt!, Tomorrow they will ask to consume humans and can we allow that!". My question is, beef is eaten worldwide and is being considered as a best and cheap protein for a large number of population!, But who is consuming humans!?. Doesn't our hindu brothers go to countries like Western and gulf where beef is so freely available!?. Also there are lot of my hindu friends who eat beef with me in Mangalore!. So why a food that is available worldwide should be banned!?. Cant it be regulated like pork and alcohol is done in UAE!? so that it is available only to those who want it and others have no problem!. Similarly, animal sacrifice is banned worldwide because of the inhuman way they are slaughtered but here too we are going exactly opposite to the world!. How can we be the super power then if we remain isolated!?. Even the gulf countries that were having holidays on Thursdays and Fridays are trying to integrate with the western world by declaring holidays on Fridays and Saturdays!.

Any place of worship where blood is spilled cannot be a place where God will reside!. God just will listen to our prayers by peaceful means and nothing else. For killing animals for food there are separate licensed places and let that be done there. Hope every one understands this.

THALEGE SURIDHA NEERU KAALIGE BANTHU. Bajrangis done their level best to steel constitutionally guaranteed food habits just for their political purposes. Now they have to pay the price. Beef eaters can survive without the beef. But denial of sacrifice in maripuja is not easy to digest emotionally and religiously. Now the chaddis must accept the policy of live n let live for human society.

You are asking like when humans are destroyed from the earth, then who will eat these animals.
God made some animals to be eaten as legally.
If you got logic point then if a single type of animal is disappeared then there is option to eat other type of legal animals.
Think there is no option for humans once they disappear, but there is a option for animals understand??

My simple question is imagine if God asks human beings to sacrifice their life will they accept it?Also imagine if someone who is superior and powerfull starts eating human beings to fulfill his stomach dont you think we oppose it?we think that we are advanced and we think that everybody in universe have the right to Live including animals. But we kill them for food. Dont you think its is wrong? If it is not wrong then sacrificing animals for any rituals is also not wrong? Its my personal view only.

This is called public disturbance. Unnecessarily you end up spoiling the public peace. It's happening for centuries and let that go on unless there is a major public concern. It's not only at Kaup Maripooja this sacrifice is happening. Many functions or rituals we have these sacrificing hens and all. Either you have a clear debate on the subject and then come to a conclusion. Just like that one fine day you this is not acceptable. As some one highlighted the same practice is there while Bakrid also, also while annual Kola and Bhootaradhane... I am not saying we should not stop all these. But a clear debate and conclusions should be across all the rituals, including Christmas ( when we get to eat Pork ) , Bakrid and all. such blind declarations or announcements will spoil the public peace.
