Myanmar defence chief pledges to safeguard general elections

Nay Pyi Taw, March 27 (IANS): Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar's Defence Services, Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing, pledged on Friday to cooperate with electoral organisations in the country to work for the November general elections.

Min Aung Hlaing made the pledge in his address at a military parade in Nay Pyi Taw to mark the 70th Armed Forces Day anniversary, Xinhua news agency reported.

The election to be held in early November would be a milestone in the implementation of Myanmar's democratic system, and the armed forces would join hands with the authorities concerned and the people to make the elections a success, he said.

He stressed that stability and peace and rule of law were key requirements for the systematic, peaceful and successful holding of the vote, warning that the armed forces would not tolerate acts that undermine the elections and forced voting through threats.

The Armed Forces Day, also known as the Resistance (against Fascist) Day, is usually celebrated with a military parade.
