Immigration officer who harassed Bengaluru woman suspended

New Delhi, Mar 28 (DHNS): An immigration officer was suspended on Friday for reportedly throwing sexual innuendoes at a Bengaluru-based woman at the Indira Gandhi International airport here last week. The victim was en route to Hong Kong.

Vinod Kumar, an immigration assistant, faced the ire of the Home Ministry after the victim placed a verbal complaint on March 23 on her return from Hong Kong, following which her father-in-law filed an e-complaint.

The victim’s father-in-law is a member of several business chambers based in Bengaluru.

Soon after receiving the complaint, the Home Ministry advised the victim to “lodge an FIR for appropriate criminal action” even as it promised a probe to ascertain “appropriate remedial and penal action.”

The ministry said the complaint, if true, is of “quite serious nature”.

The complainant claimed that the officer “verbally sexually harassed” his daughter-in-law
“not only during the immigration process at the desk, but also by following her along the travelator between domestic and international transfer.”

“He followed me and asked me something offensive,” the victim said. On her arrival at Delhi from Bengaluru on March 18 en route to Hong Kong, the officer reportedly made some queries, which questioned her integrity and character.

“How many children do you have? Where have you left them? You young girls have children and then don’t care and leave them with parents and do ‘majja’ with men. Do you drink, do you smoke, do you eat chicken, do you have fun with men when your husband is not there? Have you undergone surgery for birth control? (this was asked 4 times),” the complainant quoted the officer as saying.

The officer was constantly looking up while my daughter-in-law took the escalator and this has been recorded by a CCTV camera, the complainant said.

“My daughter-in-law was travelling alone and was in a state of shock to react to this situation or even register a complaint. So on her return from Hong Kong on March 23, she along with her husband met AFRRO Alok Kumar Verma to file a complaint,” the victim’s father-in-law added.

As he is not authorised to take complaints, Verma requested them to file it online. Then Kumar walked into Verma’s cabin and the victim identified him.

However, the complainant said that Kumar denied speaking to the victim by leaving his desk and following her on the travelator.

The victim when contaced in Bengaluru said: “I request those looking into the case to take a look at the conditions of the conversation that tool place in Alok Kumar Verma’s office (on March 22 night). The official in question did not deny the incident anywhere. This is proof enough to say that the official indeed made those statements against me.This could happen to the other staff members or to passengers. Hence strict action has to be taken in the case."

Its a very shameful incident regardless of where it took place. The officials with whom we entrust our personal information and safety have now kind of taken it upon themselves to abuse it, although i dont blame everyone for this. I am glad that the incident was reported and a quick action was taken against the official.

I totally agree with Vivek , The immigration officers at Bangalore Airport don't have basic manners and ettiquetes ,I was traveling to Dubai on a employment visa with all the employment documents from my employer was made to wait for 45 minutes can you believe for verification. I was told at one point your travel might be put on hold. After verifying my passport for 30 mins(Thier systems were not working thats what they said) he finally stamped my passport it asking me what was my qualification. This guy definitely looked from the reserved category no offense, But they try to simply harass people and try to get some kind of pleasure i guess. I have to few other countries as well the immigration officers are gentleman though they might ask question you can relate to why they are asking them, Here in bangalore they ask irrelevant question. One Question asked by immigration officer was to show my return ticket. I going for take up a job assignment maybe i would come back after a year to visit India. This is common sense . Such officers wear a coat and a Tie and sit there whereas they look and act like really uneducated and disgusting. Imagine if they can do such thing to guys no doubt the immigration officer at Delhi would have done such cheap act with the lady. They should have feedback forms or complaint forms i dont see any at airport and when you are boarding an international flight we don have time for all that as we would be reaching only 3 hours prior and when these immigration guys eat up ur time and patience you just want to curse and get on with your journey.I even had asked the immigration officers supervisor why i was made to wait for which he had no answer and told me it was standard procedure. I hope MEA woud do some changes after this.

    People,

Problem with Indian's is when they get an official post in the Government or an elected post they think they become masters of others because of their position...and superior to others by default...I have not seen this mentality any where in any western countries...

We have to try to remove this mentality first... perhaps during starting in primary schools...nobody is superior or inferior in life...all are doing their work...like actors in a drama...some have kings role some have servants role...but all are actors of the drama in the end...some have good roles and some have bad roles in real life that's all...

In India doctors think they are superior to nurses...Engineer's think they are superior to technicians...Immigration/Custom official think they are Superior to everybody who stand in line in front of them for work...I have not seen anybody behaving like this in any western country...

We need to change our thinking...start it from initial schooling...punishing these thugs every time they do it like this is not a permanent solution for this...

Caste reservation perhaps a factor in this type of behavior as well...this caste reservation is also unique to India...we don't find this anywhere else as well...

    ...JH...

I often keep silent and keep smiling then they stop questions.
But I have seen first time passengers are grilled in many airports.
You pay huge airport tax,I think almost 750 INR and then be in line for so long then face this idiots.

I have experienced one incident by Customs officer in Mumbai. My wife was a cancer patient on a wheel chair, we were stopped by Customs officers that we got an information that you were carrying lot of Gold. We said we dont have any Gold and honestly d that we have 12 gm gold bracelet in our hand bag. If any custom duty payable we are ready to pay. I was shocked that they were expecting money from us. But I was firm I will pay the duty but wont bribe. Because I stick to my word that I will pay only duty they made us to wait almost 1 hour. My wife was on wheel chair and I told them that she is a cancer patient don't harass us. Still did nothing and they all gathered and discussing about TV serials. Then they are happy that they harassed us enough and let us go... That is cruel mentality of Bombay Customs.

Fortunately now a days is less..
but previously there used to be lots of harassment by the customs..
In any case.. these sick minded guys need proper contd education.. counseling...PM Modis YOGA for mind control etc.
Let these officers .govt staff..employees be role models .. clean..crisp..efficient.Customer oriented..
if these are the questions this guy has asked that means he is 100% sick minded and some SEX issues..
he needs treatment...before he turns out to be a monster.
All these kinds of diseased govt employees if not checked routine by the Doctors.. and treated they will be LYNCHED by the public like Nagaland case..dont wait till then..and do not wait for the public to loose their cool.
    enough is enough.
what would happen if it was a ministers daughter.. or daughter in law or wife?
    would it wait this long...?
    LAW is same for all...
Let them have a name plate for identification plus let them checked by an external agency in CCTV or cameras for their efficiency...
    all in airports/sea ports /customs.
    it will be worth it...
beat the hell out of this asst officer..

Mangalore is focusing for tourism with setting up beaches and these immigration officers being a barriers and passing negativism of karnataka. Those who are harassing to the passengers at airports should be punished severely. All of us in our travel time experience these incidents either immigration, customs, ticket, check in , boarding or security counters. Hardly anyone is complaining on these issues just because not to stop their travel or do not want to confront.
