Kundapur, Mar 28: Parents of Anganwadi children at Hattiangadi in the taluk on Friday March 27 staged a protest alleging shoddy work by the contractor who undertook the construction of Anganwady building in their village. They alleged that the walls of the building under construction were not being properly cured to make them strong by spraying water on them on regular basis. Hence, they feel that the building poses danger for kids and so not suitable for being used as Anganwadi centre.

A local contractor had taken up the construction of this building for a sum of Rs 1.5 lac as grant from zilla panchayat, department of women and child welfare and the gram panchayat. The contractor after laying the foundation had undertaken the work on walls using red stones. But he had not used water for curing even after laying three rows of stones. The locals had objected to this omission, as they feel it will compromise on the quality of consstruction.

On Friday, when parents learnt that curing was not done even after 15 days, they protested alleging that the construction was unscientific.

Moreover, one room had been built earlier and the wall of the new building is constructed adjacent to the wall of this room. The wall of the present building is leaning away from the wall of the earlier room, and if a slab is built over the wall that has no support, the slab is likely to crasj on the heads of children. “The concerned officials should take immediate corrective action”, they said. In case the contractor proceeds to build the slab on that wall, they will not allow the work to continue, they warned.

Palekar, engineer in taluk panchayat, Kundapur has said that the work is being scrutinized, the red stones forming the wall without proper curing will be removed and new wall will be constructed.

The protesters have said that they will not allow continuance of the construction on the present wall. They demanded that the wall be demolished and new wall be constructed. They said that their children will not be sent to Anganwadi if these demands are not met..

    Anything belongs to Govt.is corrupt.
Your Aganawady is far better shape than the Anganwady inside Police Quarters Compound Pandeshwer,Mangalore.
Roof is broken,Tiles are falling,Bathroom is pitch dark,Children live there with a long snake. Filthy, dusty and sickening to look at the pity of those little Angels. I took lot of interest and got it repaired temporarily but still dangerous to operate as Anganwady. Sad part of this whole scene is that Shishu Kalyana officers along with Children and Women welfare officials knew but did not care.
They were may be looking for under table deals. Future of the Country as they call the Children. But if building collapses, future of the country will be buried.

Red lateral stones can even built the wall without cement only they need to be dressed in all corners properly.
There are building more than 100 years old built by Red Lateral stones without cement and no plaster, still they are intact, they used to fill kos-mannu and sand mix just to fill the gap.
People want to fight they have thousands of reason.

Instead of protesting, it would have been better all of these concerned citizens pour water for curing.

The parents should have stopped when they felt that it was shoddy work. Now after constructing the wall, they are demanding to dismantle it will add to the cost which is already quite low. Rs. 1.5 lac is quite low. I do not know how the contractor will manage it with high cost of labour and building material. Anyway, let us leave it to the good judgement of the Engineer of Taluk Panchayat.

Under old technology, the cement required curing with water. The technology of cement production has changed and new cement does not require curing. Once set it is strong enough to take the load for which it is set. The proportion of cement to sand/gravel determines the strength of concrete.

The red stones that are dense do not require curing.

In a democracy anyone can object or have an opinion. But the people that are shown in the picture, may not have the expertise to judge these things.
