Udupi: Liquor should be banned in state: Janardhan Poojary

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Mar 28: "Liquor should be banned in Karnataka state. We do not want women to shed tears over their alcoholic husbands. Liquor is opium and a curse to our society," said Congress senior leader Janardhan Poojary in a press meet here on Saturday March 28.

He congratulated former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapayee on being conferred the greatest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.

Addressing the press meet, he said, "People should have cast their votes for the Congress party in the Lok Sabha elections, but the party respects the verdict of the people. Recently, CM Siddaramaiah presented a people-friendly budget and enforced many schemes to uplift the deprived, especially the Ksheera Bhagya, Anna Bhagya and other such schemes."

He further said that he would not even discuss the possibility of compromising on the sale of liquor with KPCC and AICC. "I am firm on my views. Liquor should be banned in the state," he reiterated.

Regarding IAS officer D K Ravi’s suspicious death, he said, "CM did a good job by handing over the case from CID to CBI; better late than never. The CM has responded positively to the public demand. The investigation should be completed soon and all suspicions surrounding the death should be cleared."

Commenting on the Land Bill, he said, "Farmers are the backbone of Indian economy. We cannot live without food. Farmers should be kept in mind while passing the Land Acquisition Bill. Farmers need to retain their fertile lands. PM Modi should clarify on the Land Acquisition Act."

He expressed concerns over the increase in violence and harassment in coastal areas, and attacking the Sangh Parivar, he said, "Hindu associations tried to malign Mother Theresa’s character which was not called for. Minority communities have contributed a lot for the development of education in the country."

He also participated in International Women's Day celebration organized by district Mahila Congress Udupi the same day. On this occasion, Poojary said, "Sonia Gandhi has supported me a lot. Culture is sustained by women in society. Women deal with challenging situations and are still able to love and care."

Ten members were felicitated by the block Congress for their dedicated work.

Former MLA Gopal Bhandary, Jansrdhan Thonse, Amrith Shenoy, Veronica Carnelio, president of block Mahila Congress Jayashree Krishnaraj, Laxmi Bhat Roshni, Supriya Raj, Jyothi Hebbar, block president Sadhu Billava, Mamatha Gopi Naik, Meenakshi, Sandhya Shetty, Malini Rai and Sujatha Acharya were present.

He said liquor should be banned ! What kind of liquor? Did he mention about toddy? I am sure many poojarys will go hungry he he bans toddy !!! If liquor is opium , what about the real opium available in the market ? I think Mr . Poojary has become senile !!He should be playing with his grandchildren rather than talking about banning liquor...

Mr. Poojary, you are experienced in talking nonsense. If you dont want to women shed in tears stop selling drugs in Karnataka. The women in tears because their young kids killed due to these drug menace. I know you cant speak against these drug mafia since they are the funders for political parties like yours for elections. If you really concerned about the people of the state, stop selling drugs.

One says .. let us think of banning cow slaughter in India, another say ban liquor, yet another say..... In Gulf country few Gulf state bann liquor, but almost all the Ministers have foreign liquor at their house in stock. In India too people eat mutton/beef, drink at Hotel as well and come to home and enjoy the beautiful life without disturbing to any one. Let Poojari and the Politicians Swear to God that they are not drinking...they are not eating...

Ban Corruption and corrupted MLA & MP's. This will bring India to prosperity. By Banning liquor in Karnataka, Poojary is making his next move to make money from Illegal liquor trade. Good Move Mr. Poojary. First make sure the roads and surroundings of Mangalore are of in a livable condition. Secondly if you are so serious about the development of Karnataka, put emphasis on good roads, good govt. governance, strip the corrupt political leaders, give employment opportunities for youngsters of Mangalore in NMPT, MCF, Mangalore refinery etc., etc., Without development in these areas, banning liquor will have no consequence.

I was one of the fortunate to live in Abu Dhabi for 30 years.Arab Government is very considerate to provide all their citizens their needs like provision of all type of Liquor,Pork & beef meet etc. I hear from my friends from Kuwait & Saudi Arabia, although their Governments have banned liquor, still it is available in black.During my University studies in 1968-72 in Bombay that there was prohibition. With a result illicit liquor shops were found in almost all flats. We used to have our quick drink before the cops is to arrive to take their hafta. Many of U may be aware that Finance minister of Kerala, recently demanded crores of rupees as bribe in order to influence & to stop the prohibition scheme floated by their their Government. Our Corrupt, dishonest, Jobless politician do not know better jobs to do than getting involved with trivial issues like Religion Conversion, wasting time in introducing regional languages as medium instruction, Changing City & Street names etc.Hope many of U r watching Master Chef serial on Star. Look at Dubai & their Magnificent buildings, Hotels, Infrastructure. They got Independence much later than we got our Independence. Our Country is going to dogs day after day because of low thinking & without any vision on the part of our politicians.

Banning liquor will not solve any problem, but people instead of buying it from shops make their own or buy from illegal traders. No govt can survive without getting the tax generated from liquor. What is needed is to make people aware of its ill effects. As per medical science controlled regular intake of alchohal is good for health.

Truely it is liquor which is major concern. Poojary has voice weight that can transform the demand into reality.Baning the liquor is a must.I hope Siddu will be pressurised in this direction.Good luck Dear Poojarrre.

Congress senior leader Janardhan Poojary wants to ban liquor in Karnataka state. He should have spoken how to eradicate corruption in India. Imagine India without corruption, with opportunities for all Indians. As a foreigner I am in love with India and I want a prosperous and successful India. But when we look at the realities in India, we see corruption will stop progress in many fields.
Rural India remains mired in poverty as bleak as that
found anywhere in the world, with the exception of parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
Most of India´s illiterate (around 25 per cent of the total population) live in rural
areas and survive on less than $1 per day. Around 50 per cent of India´s homes do
not have electricity, and productivity on most farms is only one-fourth of what it is
in the non-farm economy according to Die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
The caste system, which is fortunately on the wane in India´s large cities, continues
to dominate in rural parts of India. This system makes it incredibly difficult for
people born into the lower castes to get an education and a good job. The
efficiency of the Indian economy has been hurt by the fact that some of the
brightest people in the lower castes cannot find meaningful work and are unable to
    contribute positively to the economy.
Of course, India has also many strengths that have enabled it to become one of the
fastest-growing economies in the world. These includes its call centres, its many
talented and entrepreneurial people, and its widely recognised achievements in
design and entertainment. Yet, there is no guarantee that these strengths will be
sufficient to ensure that the economy continues to expand at high rates in the
future unless additional reforms to labour laws are implemented, the weak Indian
infrastructure is overhauled, and the caste system starts to lose its grip on rural
India. But without the eradication of corruption India will fail. Banning liquor is the wrong suggestion.
    Best regards

I have never understood how governments can earn from their citizens by making them drink, perish on the one hand and feed them with subsidized rice on the other thereby being cursed by million of women and children whose life is ruined by successive governments themselves. It needs guts to attain fiscal discipline and ban liquor which is not evident presently in Karnataka, hence like in D K Ravi case, people from Andhra, Kerela and Tamil Nadu are who have reached the backdoors of power are taking our state in a wrong direction wherin one day we Kannadigas will be beggars in our own land.
