Mangaluru-Abu Dhabi Jet Airways direct flight takes off

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Updated

Mangaluru, Mar 29: The inaugural Jet Airways direct flight between Mangaluru and Abu Dhabi took off from Mangalore International Airport at 5.50 pm on Sunday March 29.

The formal ceremony was inaugurated by health minister U T Khadar, sports minister Abhaychandra Jain and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, in the presence of MLA J R Lobo, MLA Mohiuddin Bava, MLC Ivan D'Souza and others.

Addressing a press meet at the airport hours before the take-off, chief commercial officer of Jet Airways, Raj Sivakumar said, "Jet Airways will enhance its international connectivity with the introduction of a new direct daily flight linking Mangaluru, on of the top business destinations and a key port of Karnataka, with Abu Dhabi, UAE's commercial capital.

"This is the second flight (by Jet Airways) to the Gulf region from Mangaluru, the other being daily flight to Dubai," he added.

Jet Airways flight 9W502 will depart from Mangaluru at 1750 hours and arrive at Abu Dhabi at 2020 hours (local time). The return flight 9W501 will depart from Abu Dhabi at 0845 hours (local time) and arrive in Mangaluru at 1345 hours. The flight will also be code shared by Jet Airways strategic partner Etihad Airways.

The airline will deploy Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircraft on Mangaluru-Abu Dhabi route.

"We have close to 50 flights departing from multiple points in India to Gulf region. We have 270 flights to UAE per week from various points in India," Sivakumar said.

"Mangaluru is the 11th city offering service to Abu Dhabi. We have 12 flights a day from 11 cities into Abu Dhabi, offering very convenient connections to the rest of the world as well as our flights from Dammam and Kuwait. We are extremely pleased to be here launching this service and we will continue investing more and more in Mangaluru. We see huge opportunities both in terms of domestic as well as international markets and hope that in the coming days we will be here to offer additional services," he said.

He further added, "Jet Airways is pleased to provide a daily service from Mangaluru to Abu Dhabi, an indication of the airline's commitment to connect India's emerging cities to international gateway points and destinations with direct and one-stop flights. Moreover, the new service will cater to an overwhelming demand from a large number of Indians settled in the Gulf, and those wanting to travel overseas on business and tourism from Mangaluru and its neighbouring areas.

"Jet Airways since its inception has participated in the growth of the travel business to/from Karnataka. With daily flights from major destinations in Karnataka to Delhi ad Mumbai, Jet Airways offers multiple options of travelling on its expansive network," he added.

"As far as international destinations go, we will look into opportunities to add more Gulf points from Mangaluru. We are very strong in Gulf and serve major Gulf destinations, and are in the process of adding more markets as we widely establish ourselves commercially," he said.

Jet Airways along with its strategic partner Etihad Airways offers 350 weekly frequencies to Abu Dhabi from 12 Indian cities. "As part of the airline's plan to enhance global connectivity from India's emerging metros, the introduction of this new service will allow guests to avail multiple travel options through Abu Dhabi to popular destinations in Europe, North America, and the Gulf," stated a press note from the airline.

Jet Airways Karnataka general manager Harish Shenoy and others were present.

While new flights from Mangalore should be welcomed, what about runway extension? A fully loaded 737 landing on a table top runway especially during rainy season is no small task. If I am not wrong, M.R. Vasudeva, former airport manager of Mangalore had once mentioned about using some sort of concrete bridge like structures to extend the current runway on the east side since filling the valley with soil and rocks would be a huge project not to mention, it might take long time. I think, extending the runway to at least 9500 feet or 10,000 feet with CAT III landing system would not only make the landing much more safer, but also allow bigger jets to land. L&T can do feasibility study and if they can come up with a favorable report, then, an all-party delegation of local MLAs, MPs and business leaders should meet the concerned in New Delhi and get the project started. If some sort of PPP model is created, financing the project should not be a problem.

Jet Airways is doing wonderful job by connecting 3 International flights in a single day from Ahmadabad,Pune and Mangalore to Capital of UAE,Abu Dhabi. An important domestic daily connection between two important cities with International airports-Pune and Mangalore has not been directly connected with heavy passenger load is really strange.

    Well done Jet airways...
This is the Good news to who stays in Abu Dhabi to connect directly,
As we know very littlie airlines are supporting to the manglorians to connect most part of world directly,
But I want notify to the operators that if we connect directly to any international airports from Mangalore then the monopoly will start.
So I request to the all the flight operators which fly from Mangalore support together to grow our city and also request for the reasonable flight fairs,
So everybody can think about connect directly.

As a Proud Mangalorean I am proud to know Mangaluru is getting International attention by introducing new routes. Keep it up. But to have the world class Airport people mindset and service level at Mangalore Airport has to improve. Jet Airways your staff behind the counter are very snobbish and rude specially with elderly and illiterate people. Improve your attitude towards Air Passengers. Jet Airways has a good name worldwide as an airline, but come to you service level at Mangalore Airport it's pathetic. Please improve your service. At time handicapped, wheelchair bound passengers have to wait for hours to get a wheel chair. Disgusting isn't it?

Its a good news to mangaloreans. But i am surprised to notice that jet airways always forgets that it can connect to south america too with their partner airline etihad airways as there is a daily direct flight from abu dhabi to brazil. This route is never mentioned anywhere in jet airways routes. Secondly, jet airways is least aware that those who are travelling in and out of brazil can carry along three bags of 32kg each in business and first class and two bags of 32kg each in economy class as checked in baggage. I had recently travelled from Brazil to Mangalore with a return ticket and i really had tough time to check in with my two bags of 32kg each. They allowed me only after interference by etihad airways. So if anyone is going travel south america with an etihad airways ticket where it includes a stretch of journey with jet airways please be sure of your baggage allowance or else jet airways will try to impose their policy on your baggage allowance.

One more good step from Jet Airways.. Even its nice to hear that, Kuwait passengers getting flight by 1:45 layover time in Abu Dhabi. We all Mangalorieans-Kuwait request to start direct flight from Mangaluru-Kuwait-Mangaluru in Passengers convenience time. Because now Air India Express flying flight Mangaluru-Bharin-Kuwait-Mangaluru in odd timings & may be they will stop it by giving reason that "Insufficient Passengers". We are waiting for your service "Jet Airways"

Exactly. I compared the price in Aug from Mlore to Abu Dhabi between Jet and AIE. OMG jet prices are just not affordable. Agree that they are superior in service, food etc but that price difference is just huge. AIE about Rs. 13,000 and Jet was about Rs. 35,000 per person!!!
