Mangaluru/Udupi: SSLC exams get under way, students to answer Tulu paper for first time

Mangaluru/Udupi, Mar 30: Scores of students, some anxious, some confident, began writing their SSLC exams on Monday March 30 in various centres across the state.

As many as 8,56,638 students from 13,693 high schools are writing the exams this year, out of which 4,52,634 are boys and 4,03,804 are girls.

Also, 16,337 private and 32,607 repeat students are appearing in the exams. There are 3,038 exam centres in the state.

The exams will go on till April 13.

Special CCTV cameras have been installed in 829 centres out of which 50 centres have been identified as very sensitive and 148 as sensitive. Based on the past experience, the education department has come to this decision.

Special task teams have been formed to visit the examination centres. Even deputy commissioners and Zclla panchayat chief executive officers are expected to visit the centres randomly without any intimation.

In Udupi district, 36,514 students are appearing for SSLC exams, out of which 17,112 are in Udupi city. There are 58 exam centres in the district.

Among 17,112 students, 8,922 are boys and 8,190 are girls. Nearly 427 are private students and 628 are repeaters.

The department of public instructions has made all arrangements to conduct the examination smoothly.

A special police squad has been appointed to control malpractices in exam halls. Also, medical services have been provided to meet emergencies in all centers, said DDPI officer Diwakar Shetty.



Tulu examination in SSLC for the first time in Karnataka

For the first time in the history of the state, the students of Pompei Kannada Medium High School in Mangaluru will answer an exam in Tulu as the third language. The new experiment has drawn the attention of the people in Dakshina Kannada district towards the school.

The state government has awarded Tulu language, the native language of the coastal districts, the status of third language. Though the move had brought joy among the people of coastal region, it was not implemented effectively due to the lack of adequate preparations. Pompei High School near Urwa Store provided an opportunity to learn Tulu as the third language since 2011.

As many 18 students are answering the annual SSLC examination in Tulu this year.

The department of education has prepared language wise codes and Tulu language is given code number 69. The examinations in Tulu language will be held on April 10.

"As the examination is being held for the first time, extensive discussions were held by the examinations authority with Pompei school and Tulu Sahitya Academy with regard to the preparation of question papers," said Tulu Sahitya Academy president Janaki M Brahmavar.
