World's first red gin is here

Lisbon, April 1 (IANS): A Portuguese company in the city of Valenca has produced the world's first red gin.

According to the company, out of 5,000 bottles, 600 will be sent to the Angolan market, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday citing Portugal's Lusa News Agency.

Joao Guterres (63), the manufacturer, said the first 5,000 litres produced have all been sold for 29.80 euros ($32) a bottle and he hopes to sell 15,000 bottles this year.

Guterres, who has been in the sector for 50 years, says the idea to produce red gin "Tinto Gin Premium", was conceived a year and a half ago.

The new gin has 14 ingredients, including dill, laurel, elder flower and water mint.

"It is a very peculiar gin and much more fruity. It's a gin which even people who don't normally like gin fall in love with," he added.

Guterres will present his gin in Valenca on April 23.
