Israeli forces arrest Palestinian lawmaker

Ramallah/Jerusalem, April 2 (IANS): Israel on Thursday arrested a member of the Palestinian parliament in the West Bank city of Ramallah, official Palestinian sources told Xinhua news agency.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the arrest, saying the lawmaker, Jarrar, is "a leader in the terror organisation of the Popular Front of the Liberation of Palestine".

Jarrar is a leading figure in the Palestinian organisation.

According to Palestinian sources, Israeli soldiers broke into the house of Jarrar and arrested her.

The soldiers seized two laptops and a mobile phone in the raid, the sources added.

The IDF said in a statement that Jarrar has "actively supported and encouraged terror activities over recent months".

"Jarrar's detention is based on substantial concerns for the security and safety of the region," the statement said.

Israel is now holding 16 Palestinian members of parliament in prison; most of them are Hamas representatives.

Also on Thursday, the IDF announced that it has arrested 12 "wanted" Palestinians in the West Bank.
