Bengaluru girl's death: School chairman, director arrested

Bengaluru, Apr 2 (IANS): The chairman and director of a school in which a teenage girl was shot dead were arrested on Thursday for failing to comply with safety regulations, police said. Both were released on bail later.

"We have arrested Pragathi School & PU College chairman Som Singh and director Prashanth for flouting safety norms and negligence," a police officer told reporters. Though both were released on bail, they will be questioned, he added.

School attendant Mahesh, 41, had allegedly shot dead Gauthami, 17, in her hostel room in the school premises on Tuesday night and fled. He was nabbed on Wednesday and has been sent to two weeks judicial custody.

The accused also fired at Gauthami's roommate Shirisha, 16, leaving her with a injury on her right ear. She is recovering in a private hospital.

During interrogation, Mahesh told the investigation team that he found the home-made revolver he had used near the K.R. Puram railway station, but police said they were "not convinced by his conflicting and incoherent replies on where from he got the pistol and reason for killing the girl".

Gauthami, who completed the two-year pre-university course, had stayed back in the hostel to prepare for entrance tests for higher studies.

Meanwhile, a massive protest demonstration was held at the school by hundreds of its students, parents and civic activists, demanding stringent action against the management.

The incident occurred a few months after three young girls in two private schools across the city were allegedly sexually abused by their teachers or physical training instructors, provoking statewide outrage.

Without checking the background of the attendant from far off village and without police verification the Chairman and Directors gave job to an unknown young man. This is their main fault as it was the main cause for death of innocent girl. In fact Chairman & Director should not have been given Bail.

I fully agree with you but is it possible and practical to check up the background and police verification of so many employees working in any organization or institution ? Now it is very difficult to get manpower for lower posts. The problem is now the trust , sincerity and dedication is missing in many people. The principal can not be after each member of the organization to check if anyone carries any weapon. More over this particular culprit was very popular in the college as per the statement of one of the relative of the victim. i too condemn this incident.

A semi-literate attender was made as warden of girls hostel and he was given power to maintain discipline inside the Hostel. That brute misused his power and became despotic and when girls rebelled against his high handedness he shot at some girls and killed one and injured another seriously.
As he hails from Naxalite area of Shivamogga it was easy for him to get country pistol. This incident has exposed the naxalite connection to ordinary people in some districts of our state, and also it has exposed the incompetent management of PU College. where more than 1500 students were studying. It is right on the part of police to have arrested the School Chairman & Director.

ALL THOSE MEDIA PEOPLE WHO FOOLISHLY RAISED DOUBT ON THE CHARACTER OF THE VICTIM SHOULD BE CONDEMNED. Why Media people always jump to the conclusion of 'Love Affair' whenever any girl is murdered or commits suicide ???

Chairman is arrested because he appointed a semi literate rustic as unofficial Warden and also gave him quarters within the premises of girls Hostel. Giving a living place to a young Man within girls hostel is NOT allowed as per Rules anywhere in India.

This chairman was so foolish that he gave power to just a newly appointed Peon to maintain discipline in the hostel and abuse the girls at slightest pretext as if he is the real warden.
