Dust storm hits Uttar Pradesh, kills five

Lucknow, April 3 (IANS): Five people, all from a family, were killed on Friday in Barabanki as the roof of their house caved in during a severe dust storm, police said.

The accident occurred in Bhitauli Kalan village when the dust storm shook many people in the area out of their sleep. But by the time this ill-fated family woke up, the roof of their house caved in, killing all of them on the spot.

Officials told IANS that the house belonged to a labourer and he lived there with his family.

Those killed have been identified as Shamshad, his wife Reshma, their children Rehana, Shadab and Shazia.

Two others have been injured in the accident and have since been admitted to a local medical facility.

Barabanki district magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra said that financial compensation as per law would be given to the dependants of the deceased.

A severe dust storm also hit Lucknow and neighbouring areas early on Friday, leaving behind a trail of devastation at some places.

The storm also damaged many mud houses, snapped power lines and uprooted trees.
