What is obesity

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.

How do you know you are obese

Body mass index is a rough guide to measure obesity. It is defined as a person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his or her height (in metres). A person with a BMI of 30 or more is generally considered obese and a person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered overweight.

It is not an accurate measure of obesity though, as it may not correspond to the same degree of fatness in different individuals.

What are the risks of obesity?

High BMI may result in cardiovascular diseases, mainly heart disease and stroke, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis and some kinds of cancer like endometrial, breast and colon

Why childhood obesity is dangerous

Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood. In addition to these future hazards, obese children experience breathing difficulties, increased risk of fractures, hypertension, early markers of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and psychological effects.

What are the causes of obesity and overweight

A person becomes obese or overweight when there is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Globally there has been a rise in obesity because there is an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat. Also people are less active physically due to sedantary jobs, changing modes of transporation and increasing urbanization.

How can one prevent obesity or overweight?

Watch what you are eating and reduce fats and sugar from your diet. Adding fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fibres to your diet may help your cause. According to WHO, physical activity of 60 minutes everyday for kids and 150 minutes per week for adults is important to stay fit.

Did you know?

– Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980.
– In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese.
– 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2014, and 13% were obese.
– Most of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight.
– 42 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2013.
– Obesity is preventable.

These studies warn about the perils of Obesity:

Obese women more likely to get cancer
Occupational sitting among women linked to obesity
High-sugar diet in fathers can lead to obese offspring
Half a million cancers a year fuelled by obesity
Obesity silently damages heart

I read an article sometime back in Vartha bharati, that Our Honourable former P.M. Vajpayee used to relish beef items during his Foreign trips. When questioned he stated that Foreign cows are not Go Mathas. Only Indian cows are holy. Any one can refer to this article if they get in touch with the referred news paper. Apart from this they will tell u that the sanatan dharm religious scripture recommend sacrificing the cow to gain Gods pleasure &success. You may as well know this if u read Ambedkar or Swamy Vivekananda. But it takes little homework and botheration. It is very easy to rot but takes lot of effort to be clean. I mean it is difficult to appreciate & praise but easy to find fault & criticize. Is it not so.

The most common causes of obesity are overeating and physical inactivity. Ultimately, body weight is the result of genetics, metabolism, environment, behavior, and culture.

    1.Genetics
    2.Overeating
3.A diet high in simple carbohydrates
    4.Frequency of eating
    5.Slow metabolism
    6.Physical inactivity

Its not only about food its about activity.....People have moved towards packed and processed food that is one of the major risk factor....Some people claim non veg is the reason it is not entirely true...if you eat meat and do heavy exercise you would probably be the strongest person ...contrary eating meat and stating idle may increase chances of being obese...it is not only related to meat...having vegetable oil or high starch and sugary foods from plant source and staying idle will lead to similar effect....
People used to demonise meat earlier now it is not the case...Meat provide complete proetin which are readily absorbed by body compared to other plant source which are not complete and it also has vital minerals and vitamins for strong and healthy muscle and bone.....what you need to avoid is fried items...
Also to remembers need to take fruits and vegetables ...it is also good...have a practice of having both veg/non veg in your diets....dont stick to one...
Like animals source where cholesterol is considered main enemy ..
.. plant sources too contain enemy..like oxalix acid and phytic acid...present in greens, cereals ,nuts and legumes
What it does is it absorbs vital minerals from our body like calcium or iron or zinc or VitD and makes you anaemic or lead your body to arthritis and osteoporosis...apart from that oxalic acid is major contributor for Kidney stones...
Now people tend to look to avoid high fat/cholesterol/triglyceride rich foods, phytic acid or oxalic acid rich foods
(I am neither a dietecian nor a doctor ...it is just my suggestion)

    Obesity
is a big problem in many countries. In Europe, people
are considered obese when their body mass index (BMI) exceeds
30 kg/m2. They are considered overweight if the BMI is
25-30 kg/m2. In simple terms you are either of normal weight,
overweight (25-30 kg/m2) or obese (over 30 kg/m2). It is no
secret that most methods of treating obesity have failed. Some are
good for a short duration but most people revert to their old habits.
Habits are hard to get rid off. Habits that have been ingrained in
your system since childhood. Obesity is most commonly caused by a
combination of excessive eating, lack of physical activity, and
genetic susceptibility with hormonal or psychiatric disorders.
Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly
heart disease, type-2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain
types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. What is the solution? Is there a
way to stop this epidemic of obesity, which is a disease, a medical
condition? In 2013, Last year, World Health Organization (WHO)
member states d a target to stop the rise in obesity by 2025.
A report from the Global Burden of Disease Study on global, regional
and national trends in overweight and obesity has shown that obesity
is still increasing worldwide, including in Canada, particularly
among young people. Obesity will only be curbed by population-level
measures supported by legislation. There is no disagreement among
experts that physical activity is not enough to prevent or treat
obesity, unless it is combined with some kind of dietary
intervention. Health experts agree there is no single solution to the
problem of obesity. We all should help people make better choices.
People are addicted to sweet and high-fat foods that are inexpensive
and easily available. We need to change our approach. We should
encourage school-based nutrition and activity, incentives for active
commuting, restrict portion sizes and reduce the sale of
    sugar-sweetened beverages and other high-calorie, nutrient-poor food
    products.

    Best regards
