Mangaluru: Women in black protest against moral policing

Mangaluru, Apr 8: The Mahila Daurjanya Virodhi Vedike organized a silent protest at Nehru Maidan on Tuesday April 7 condemning the recent moral policing in the district and atrocities against women.

Addressing the media, Gulabi Bilimani, a women activist said, "In the name of moral policing, immoral policing activites have increased in the district. So we have organized a protest to condemn it. In the Dakshina Kannada alone 39 moral policing cases were reported from January to December 2014. In the month of March 2015, five such cases were reported. This is really alarming. In the name of moral policing they are attacking women's rights, the rights which have been given by the Constitution of India,"

"If we are violating any rules, we have our parents or relatives to look after these issues. When a girl is walking in the street she is abused and thrashed. We condemn this so-called 'teaching lesson to women'. The state government is also equally responsible for the rise in such incidents. The state government is not taking any concrete steps. It lacks will power to curb these forces, thus there is a rise in these cases in the district," Bilimani added.

"The police is also equal responsible. The police is cooperating with the moral police activists instead of providing safety to women or to a girl found talking to a boy. We condemn all the actions taken by police as these are actions against the victims of the incidents rather than action against the moral policing activists. The police participation plays a vital role in reducing such cases in the district," Bilimani concluded.

Most of the women wore black and displayed placards condemning the recent moral policing incidents. Men along with a few children were also present.

Vidya Dinakar with other women activists, other members of Mahila Daurjanya Virodhi Vedike were present at the occasion.

It is wonderful to see these women forging ahead to make a point. It does not matter the number, we congratulate those who had the strength to stand up to their rights and protest against the authorities who have in many incidents of moral policing given support to them instead of the victims who suffered under their moral policing. Every citizen has a right to live according to his or her beliefs as long as it is not illegal, this right is supported by our constitution and they stand responsible for any consequences. The elected politicians and the authorities’ duty is to help the citizens, who have elected them to power, to ensure they enjoy their rights. As such what is the meaning of some individuals who call themselves moral police, try to impose their beliefs and values on others for whom they are not even responsible. There are parents, family who along with educational institutions play the role of instilling values and principles to the youngsters. The parents today work very hard to ensure a better future for their children and there is a strong bond between them and their children, they are the best people to care for them and not these so called moral police. Do the police even take a bit of a time to see who they are and what makes them eligible to conduct this moral policing and since when the police have given the law and order situation to these people to go around and see who is going out with whom, and where. When we all conduct ourselves well and learn to respect everyone be it a child, a youngster, a lady or men in all walks, and we look at each other with trust, these incidents will stop. Life is an echo, what you send out comes back. What you see in others exists in you. So see goodness and give goodness. When you see these youngsters, look at them with respect, care and understanding and treat them how you would want others to treat your own. Brush up your values and please do not go to exercise your right on others.

Women should keep active in that stage and she do not look like 9 month pregnant anyway and it is her choice to participate. From where did you get that information that she is forced?

Why the burkha has come here in the middle of Moral Policing? What burkha has got to do with moral police? Have you seen anyone raising question against a certain group why they are wearing orange lungi or orange shawl? Have you seen anyone raising question against nuns & sisters why they are wearing the scarfs & such dress, which is somewhat same as burkha?

Before anyone raise any such questions, please study what’s behind it! In Islam it is a must for women to cover their body both at home as well as outside. They should not reveal their hair to anyone other than their husband. However, we have so many Muslim women who do not wear burka or follow this. Despite the Islamic law, it is a personal choice of practice and no one in Islam force anyone to practice such law. After all, it will be the individual who need to answer after death but not the society!

So request you to leave the burka issue out from this moral police and concentrate on making our society a safer place for everyone to practice what they want and live peacefully.

In india, the woman was free! if you see our old temple structure, indians were pretty open in dressing! but ever since Mogul came, women were not allowed to wander openly and they were made to wear ghoonghat and not to show their faces in public!... else, indians were free as they are!

and about nuns- it is their dress! fathers wear white robe, doesn't mean, every man wears it. don't justify that!

First of all, WHY Moral Policing? Are those involved with Moral Policing are the right people to do so or do they have any moral responsibility to teach how one should behave in the society? The answer from all will be a very big NO.

Well, one question to all those members of moral policing….! What if any member of their own family get thrashed on the street by members of the Moral Police? What will be their reaction? Will they support the Moral Police for teaching them how to behave and further extend some more thrashing at home or support their family members and fight against Moral Police?

I think it’s a good move by these ladies to raise some noise against the Moral Police, which will for sure grow stronger and one fine day all the members of society will fight against this Moral Police. Better late than never, let’s unite for the fight against evils of the society!

Do not mix moral policing with religion. If we (citizen of India) notice anything wrong around us, we have the right to object it or report it to police. If you ignore and move your way, i say you are living a life of dead. Police cannot be everywhere to catch hold of all the illegal’s or criminals of their area.

I cant stop me from writing this.

What a weirdo thinking you have got. When you can spend your whole night in club , dance bar and booze till your neck and come home , does your Mom or sister beat you ??? or when you booze till your neck at bar and step out and group of ladies and come and bash you in broomstick and put you photo in paper , what will be your and your family reaction ??

Dont try to teach your morality to the society ... teach this only to your sisters... You dont have rights to interfere in others life until some illegal things are going on.....

    Vicky,

So you are conservative person. Ok its fine. But you should not impose your views on others with the excuse of morality. How can you say what is good and what is bad? How can you say that the outcome of certain act will result into unless you can predict the future with 100% accuracy?

''That should not give them a reason to loose morality in life on which the society stands.''

when you are talking about morality i presume its religious morality. Now i have to ask you which religion you follow and which morality do you implement. Do remember that India is a secular country you cant implement religious morality on people. No matter how conservative you may be you cant force your will on others cause then you will be infringing on others fundamental rights.

''I am a conservative person and i feel its wrong to cheat parents & husband''

Now i cant say that a girl or boy cheated their parents. May be they might have let them down but still i consider that parents who coerce their children to do the are worse.

Now being a conservative always comes with a heavy baggage that you have to haul around. Hatred, racism, sexism, bigotry comes with it.just listening to american conservatives will tell you how out of reality their views can be.

Finally good step by womens. But i dint saw the large number of supporters behind this protest. My suggestion is to all Womens associations, your protest should not be fose for any channel/paper. Your protest should give an immediate result. For that effective result, gather all womens by village/taluk wise at same time. Then definitely VHP/Bhagaranga Dala goons will fear to touch even your footware. I'm sorry to say, even girls should be careful when they fell love with boy. Love should be in limit untill marriage. If you cross limit, others will give nice color like blaming other community guys. Parents should keep eye on thier Son & daughter. Now a days we can reach to our kids easily, because 2nd Standard kid also wants i-phone. Jst take care our children, rather than blaming once time is over. If everything in limit, its ending also good. If not, we will find everyone as police.

    Mishra,

Your comment is sexist in nature. Just because you saw women protesting, are you suggesting them to sweep? If it were men would you have said the same? i guess not.

Next by what you have commented i dont think you can really understand much. Rapes do happen. It doesnt mean that all women have to sit inside the house. They have every right to go outside and do what ever they want. Simply because a women is outside at 12 at night, or wearing the clothes she likes to wear does not mean that she is asking to get raped.

We speak about giving capital punishment to the rapist, but sad part is that we are creating an environment for rapist for committing crime by blaming the victim.

Lastly, stop treating women like property.

Instead of Protesting in Mangaluru they should have protested in Kalladka which is the root of moral Police.
Besides they should have protested in front of IGP office in Mangalore, because in DK dist moral policing is increasing only because of support from Khaki police indirectly. Whenever there is moral policing incident the Khaki police go there and they never arrest any moral police, but instead they take into custody all boys and girls who were the victims and keep them in police custody overnight and then call their parents and insult them by taking Bond from them even though they have not committed any crime. This way police punish victims only instead of punishing perpetrators.

What is the right path and wrong path you are taking about. Who are you to decide what i right and what is wrong. How you can gaurantee that if they follow what you have chosen for them it will lead to happiness.

From what you have commented I feel that you are one of the people who consider women as property. In India we treat women as such, were women is a property of father, husband or community. We treat has if women dont have brains of their own and need a constant supervision. I have already in my previous comments have mentioned about this. Women are individuals, they have their own dreams and ambition. they are not cattle, were you can tie them in a place.
