PM pays respects to Guru Tegh Bahadur

New Delhi, April 9 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid respects to Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth of the 10 gurus of Sikhism.

"On his Prakash Utsav, I bow to Guru Tegh Bahadur ji. His bravery and spirit of sacrifice will always inspire people," Modi said in a statement.

Guru Tegh Bahadur, the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, was born on April 1, 1621, in Amritsar and executed on November 24, 1675, on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Delhi.

He became the 9th Guru of Sikhs on April 16, 1664, a position earlier occupied by his grand-nephew, Guru Har Krishan.

His head was chopped off in public at Chandni Chowk in November 1675. Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib is built at the site where the Guru was beheaded. The headless body was cremated a day after his death. The Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib was built at this location.
