Bengaluru, Apr 9: It is now left to Karnataka Governor VajubhaiRudabhaiVala to decide on the fate of Siddramaiah regime’s move to trifurcate the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

A day after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called on the Governor by visiting Raj Bhavan on the need for the State Cabinet’s decision to promulgate the ordinance, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra met the Governor on Thursday and formally submitted the State Government’s proposal for promulgating the ordinance

The Siddaramaiah government has decided to trifurcate the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) through an ordinance route.

Jayachandrarequested Governor Vala at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday and submitted to him the Ordinance Bill, which required the Governor’s assent, for trifurcate the BBMP.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Governor, Jayachandra said the Cabinet had decided to split the BBMP into three owing to its administrative inefficiency and failure to provide basic infrastructure on time.

The BBMP’s financial position was in doldrums and bills worth over Rs 6,000 crore were pending, the minister said.

He claimed that the Governor has promised to take a decision on the ordinance bill as per the law.

The State Government hasdecided to promulgate ordinance and hold elections later to three civic bodies against the existing one, whose term expires by the month-end.

The Opposition BJP and JD(S) parties have already submitted petitions to the Governor opposing the move to split of the BBMP into three.

If the governor promulgates the ordinance, the BBMP will cease to exist.

The ordinance seeks to amend the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act to dissolve the BBMP. It proposes to empower the government to appoint an administrator and constitute three local bodies.

The BBMP was constituted in 2007 by amending the KMC Act, and the strength of the existing BBMP Council is 198 members.
