India to chair global renewable energy panel meet


New Delhi, April 10 (IANS): India has been designated as chair for the ninth meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Council scheduled to be held on June 10-11 in Abu Dhabi, it was announced here on Friday.

India is a founder member of IRENA, an intergovernmental organization supporting countries in their sustainable energy efforts, the ministry of new and renewable energy said in a statement here.

It is a platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy, the statement said.

The IRENA Council is the main governing body of the agency responsible for implementing various decisions of the IRENA Assembly, that provides policy guidance.
