Govt will defend rights of citizens of all faiths: PM Modi at UNESCO Hq

Paris, Apr 10 (PTI): At a time when India is witnessing increased activities of right-wing groups, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said his government will defend the rights of citizens of all faiths.

Modi, during his address at the UNESCO headquarters here, also asked the global community to dwell deep on culture and religion to overcome the rising tide of extremism as well as violence.

"We will defend and protect the rights and liberty of every citizen. We will ensure that every citizen, of every faith, culture and creed has an equal place in our society; belief in our future; and the confidence to pursue it," he said.

Noting that culture remains a source of conflict in many parts of the world, Modi said it must connect and not divide and that it should be a bridge to greater respect and understanding between people.

"We must turn deep into our cultures; traditions; and religions; to overcome the rising tide of extremism, violence, and divisions across the world," said the Prime Minister.
The Modi government is under attack from opposition parties as well as some minority community groups for not being able to curb the activities like 'Ghar Wapsi' (conversions) by RSS-backed groups.

Calling climate change a pressing global challenge, the Prime Minister who arrived here late last night, said his government has set a target of adding 175,000 MW of clean and renewable energy in the next seven years.

His remarks come ahead of a crucial UN meet on climate change to be held here later this year.

Modi also noted that the foundation of India's Constitution rests on a fundamental principle of the peace and prosperity of all.

"The strength of the nation is determined by the joined hands of every citizen; and, real progress is measured through empowerment of the weakest," he said.

"We have built a modern state in an ancient land, with a timeless tradition of openness and co-existence and, a society of extraordinary diversity," Modi told the gathering which included a large number of NRIs.

"This has been our creed since we assumed office nearly a year ago," he said.
He underlined that "culture must connect, not divide, our world" and that it should be a bridge to greater respect and understanding between people.

The Prime Minister, while outlining the steps taken by his government for the development of the country, said "We shall judge our progress not just by the cold statistics of growth, but by the warm glow of belief and hope on human faces. For me, it means many things".

Invoking the Indian Constitution, he underlined that its foundation rests on a fundamental principle "the peace and prosperity of all is indivisible from the welfare of the individual".

During his 20-minute speech, Modi referred to the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi as also philosopher sage Aurobindo, at whose statue outside the UNESCO building he paid his respects.

"There is much that we can learn from his humanism and spiritualism, from his belief in the unity of individual consciousness with the world outside; the enlightened purpose of education; the service of science; and, the unity of world, founded on national freedom, diversity of civilisations and autonomy of culture," he said.

Noting that the link between habitat and fulfilment of human potential is deep and strong, he said, "It is a guiding spirit for the purpose of this institution – the defence of peace in the mind of men".

Among those who were present in the audience were Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, senior Congress leader Karan Singh, who is on the Executive Board of UNESCO, as also Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat, who was mobbed by several NRIs for photographs.

"The highest priority for my government is to provide a roof over every head; power in every house; sanitation and clean water within everyone's reach; a hope for every child to survive; and a chance for every new mother to love her child," Modi said.

"It also means clean rivers, air that we can breathe and forests filled with the sound of birds. To achieve these goals, we need not just policies and resources, but even more the power of science," he said.

Sri. Sankar: While observing the 3 term tenure of Mr. Modi as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, it was very visible how from the topmost rank of Christian persecution in 2001, instantly started when he took control of Gujarat, and later on how Gujarat came down to the lowest rank in the minority Christian persecution under Mr. Modi was an eye opening turn of events. As some people have mentioned that the 2002 earthquake changed the mindset, I don't fully agree with that.

Probably, Mr. Modi had no intention of playing trick with the Christmas holiday last year and the Good Friday this year, which has created far greater confusion and frustration to the minority Christian community. I don't have any idea about the number of national holidays, may be 18, and out of that being Christian holidays, the most celebrated holiday of the world the Christmas, and mind-searching Good Friday.

Why the BJP led Government tried to play with those days?

Sri. Sankar, you are a firm follower of BJP or her sister parties and a firm follower of Mr. Modi. I don't have any right to question your personal right and liberty.

Please understand that we are living in the 21st century and the whole world is like a family. The world didn't see what the 550 Kings of India did before the independence their ruthless rule and deity image etc etc. But, now, that kind of attitude will not work out. Mr. Modi has to take firm stand to protect the rights of every citizen of India in their religious liberty because the whole world is now fully aware of the fact that the Christian community is under some unknown bewilderment.

I have always addressed the Prime Minister of India with due respect, and do expect him to keep the fundamental rights of every person in India irrespective of their religious faith.

Shame on you Mr Prime Minister standing on the international platform and lieing in front of the world. If you have guts own responsibility what atrocities you have done against the minorities. When Mamata Bannerji was requesting for CBI inquiry of nun gang rape you woundn't allow the CBI team to go to Kolkatta whereas for D.K.Ravi's case you were all ready to send the team just because CBI is under central government you think you own it. It is very clear that all the skeletons in your cupboard will be exposed if CBI starts it investigation. Keeping mum will not prove you are innocent while you rule the country and things happen right under your nose and you turn a blind eye. You are guilty as a chief minister of Gujarat and Prime minister of India.

Mr. Modi has now a special assignment to answer about the religious liberty in India while he is visiting other countries for aircraft deal or other business talk.

None of the former Prime Ministers of India had this luck of preaching religion in the foreign visits.

Indeed, they are all watching whether the word is kept or not so Mr. Modi has another extra burden to keep the religious liberty intact in India for the minorities.

It is sad that the Prime Minister has to go to the UN Headquarters and profess his faith in the constitution and promise to abide by it. Why should such incidents occur at all in India? Why is he unable to control his ministers whose intemperate speeches are causing division among the people? What a shame to convince the world on protecting citizens which is the fundamental duty of every Government. Instead of putting us to shame by admitting his Government fault by such statements it is better Mr Modi "Gharvapasi" fast.

What about in vadodara in your own constituency where slums dominated by muslims were razed down under slum rehabilitation project ....and in new residency muslims are not welcomed coz residence in that area doesnt like muslims in their locality and they raised objection....and authorities have submitted to their pressure forcing these people to live on streets just because they are muslims...

Forget all statements, the beef Ban, the law itself is a joke, if Modi making a statement that Government will defend rights of citizens of all faiths.

They burn a church in Delhi and then call it as fire accident. They start ghar wapsi and say that they are Hindu origin Muslims.

This Man is really making mockery of our country. When he is in Delhi he is only facing cameras and smiling for media. Right at his Nose the so called right wing MP’s and ministers are making provoking and unlawful statements against the consitituitution.
He has to go all the way Paris and make such statements? The need of the hour is not statements but arrest those who make such provoking speeches. The pan chewing veg doctor openly challenges the Muslims to leave the cities where Hindus are living in majority.
The joker doctor and his team forced the businessman Aliasgar Zaveri, a Bohra Muslim to sell his Bungalow because it is located in a Hindu Majority area. They camped in front of his house and placed RSS, VHP, Bhagawa flags and forced him to sell to a Gujarati real estate called Bhumiti.
Let’s wait and see what happens in 2019, if Indians are smart then they will realize how they got fooled by a chaiwala.

Is he really looking after the welfare of minorities and majorities or is he looking after the interest of big Corporations? Every one of us should ask this question to ourselves and I am sure we all will learn the bitter truth of Modi's governance. One area where the previous govt. was very cautious was to ensure life saving drugs are available at reasonable rates. With Modi's latest pact with Drug companies, the cost of almost all life saving drugs are jumped by 300 - 400%. Whom is he fattening? Whose purse is getting lined up? Anyone has answers?
