Rich temples may open gold vaults for PM Modi

Mumbai/New Delhi, Apr 11 (Reuters): The two-century-old Shree Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai devoted to Lord Ganesha bristles with close circuit cameras and is guarded by 65 security officers.

It is one of India's richest temples, having amassed 158 kg of gold offerings, worth some $67 million or over Rs. 417 crore, and its heavily guarded vaults are strictly off limits.

India is the world's biggest consumer of gold and ancient temples have collected billions of dollars in jewellery, bars and coins over the centuries. A few years ago, a treasure of gold worth an estimated $20 billion or over Rs. 1,24,750 crore was discovered in secret subterranean vaults in the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple in Kerala.

To help tackle India's chronic trade imbalance, PM Modi's government is reportedly planning to launch a scheme next month that would encourage temples to deposit their gold with banks in return for interest payments.

The government would melt the gold and loan it to jewellers to meet the seemingly insatiable consumer appetite for gold and reduce economically-crippling gold imports, which accounted for 28 per cent of India's trade deficit in the year ending March 2013.

India's annual gold imports of 800 to 1,000 tonnes could be cut by a quarter if temples decided to participate in the scheme, say government and industry sources.

"We would be happy to deposit our gold to nationalised banks if the policy is beneficial, safe and earns good interest," said Narendra Murari Rane, chairman of the trust for the Siddhivinayak temple, portions of which are gold-plated.

But a Mumbai-based gold merchant, who said he and his father had donated around 200 kg of gold to Siddhivinayak and other temples over the years, said it would be a sin for the temples to earn interest on the gold offered to the gods. "I make donations to God; not to any temple trust," the 52-year-old merchant said.

Key to the government's plan will be the interest rates offered for gold deposits.

A similar gold monetization plan launched in 1999 proved ineffective, in part because the interest rates offered on gold deposits were regarded by temple officials as too low.

Under that scheme India's top lender the State Bank of India offers 0.75 per cent to 1 per cent, and only 15 tonnes of gold has been deposited so far.

India raised the import duty on gold, the country's biggest non-essential import, and imposed other restrictions in 2013 after the current account deficit hit a record $190 billion.

If India can cut imports, that would pressure gold prices that fell to a four-month low last month before recovering. Lower gold prices will help India cut its import bill. However, a successful gold monetization scheme could also expose the government to potential risks, if gold prices were to take off and depositors decided to withdraw at the same time.

"There is going to be a lock-in period under the new gold monetizing scheme," said Sudheesh Nambiath, an analyst at precious metals consultancy GFMS. "Banks will have to replenish the stocks with imports later (if temples withdraw gold)."

    Shankar, You asked this question.
What happens to the mandatory donations requested/ordered during Sunday masses in churches throughout the country, especially in rural areas? Let me answer for you since you will never know how to learn. As Jossy said each and every donation is accountable and a committee will supervise unlike in Mutt where there will be one single person who is ALWAYS boss. The pries would be changed every 5 years and upon transfer he has to the income and expenditure to the new priest. I request you to get some inside knowledge before generalising the comment. By the way, I had donated for that FUTURE ram mindir building in Ayodhya and did worked hard even in canvasing for donations when I was an active RSS member. You look like a board member of RSS, can I ask what happened to that money collected about 23 years ago?

God created gold Ore and Iron Ore and ordinary soil with his own holy Hand. So for God the Gold or Iron or Soil are of same value or to be precise they are of no value for Him. Therefore, it is utterly foolish to think that God can be pleased by donating Gold. But if any wealthy man donates a simple Mangala-sutra to any newly marrying couple from poor family then God will be surely pleased.
But in whole of India, is there a single such Priest or Swamiji or Godman who tells this to his devotees and dissuade them from donating gold to Temple or Matt ?

While paying interest on the gold, it must also be heavily taxed, as most of it is derived from the ill gotten wealth of devotees who offer it to the temples in the first place.

As a part of worship, people of various religions donate gold and other things to their place of worship. When Sai Baba died, how many core Rs. worth wealth he had?

Is that to keep in the places of worship like a banking safety box as a dead investment?

Is GOD, the Creator of everything including gold is very happy in visiting the gold and silver collection daily and rejoice in that sight added gold collection?

Mr. Mallya without paying to this Kingfisher airlines employees their due salary but donated two golden doors worth Rs 80 lakhs to a Temple in Karnataka while some of them committed suicide.

All these hidden golden asset must be wisely used to wipe off the poverty of the suffering people. Let the Hindu Temple gold wealth be used for the suffering Hindus exclusively if they don't want to give any other religious people.
I am openly talking to all religions hoarding wealth without using properly for the suffering humanity.

Only in India and some Buddhist countries this habit of donating Gold ornaments or diamond Crown or body Armour to God is prevalent. And also Kilos of gold or Silver is used for covering Temple Roof or making Golden Chariot for God. So, rich people should be convinced that by 'Bribing' God with Golden materials they cannot wash away their Sins.
Mainly the Priests of popular Temples should be told to stop their holy business of misleading the Wealthy people that by donating gold to God they can earn God's blessings easily. Because those businessmen who earn wealth through dubious means only donate Gold to God.

So the forefathers of current Christians and Muslims would have contributed to the temples treasury.

It is the wealth of ALL Indians who were Hindus once.

How conveniently the same Government is planning to grab the wealth from the temples!

As always, Modi's plans come with promises. Great promises. "The temples will get interest from the Modi Government".

But what will the temples do if the Modi Government tells them tomorrow that the temple wealth belongs to the Government?

Like blade companies, forget about the interest, even the principal also vanishes in thin air!
