Former MLA Arakeri chosen for Ambedkar Award

Bengaluru, Apr 13: Former MLA and retired teacher S S Arakeri has been selected for the Karnataka Government’s prestigious Dr B R Ambedkar Award.

A committee headed by writer S Siddalingaiah selected Arakeri for the award. The award carries cash prize of Rs 5 lakh and 20 gram gold.

Arakeri is a retired lecturer of the law department, Bangalore University.

Born on June 12, 1934, at Arakeri village n Vijayapura district, the former MLA was associated with the Republic Party of India.

He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1967 and 1978.

Karnataka’s Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya said Arakeri was instrumental in the installing the Dr Ambedkar’s statue in front of the Vidhana Soudha and naming the road passing in front of the Vidhana Soudha as the Dr B R Ambedkar Road.

Arakeri had played a vital role in constructing the Dr Ambedkar Bhavan in the city and Ambedkar Engineering and Medical College.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will present the award to Arakeri at the banquet hall of the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday.
