India's secularism is strong, it will not shake: Modi

Berlin, April 14 (IANS): India's secularism is strong and it will not shake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his address to the Indian community in Berlin.

Addressing a community reception hosted by the Indian ambassador, the prime minister said: "India's secularism is not so weak that it will crumble. Our secularism is strong, and it will not shake; our self confidence should also not shake," he said.

He also said that India will set the agenda for the climate change summit in Paris this year.

Modi said that Indians have always traditionally followed the principle of reuse and recycle, and never believed in wasting nature's resources. India worships mother nature, he said.

"Reuse and recycle -- we have been doing for years, but the world is using it now. But we never highlighted this aspect of ours, of reuse and recycle. Now the world is telling us to reuse and recycle. Those who damage the environment are today asking us to pay. They are asking us to reduce carbon emissions."

"We are those who pay respect to environment, we call rivers mother, worhship trees, and nature, it is part of our culture, and we should go the world with this," Modi said.

"We should stand with confidence, that we can show the world the way. We will set its agenda, I want to assure you. India will set the agenda for the climate change summit, and on the basis of our values; we are not those to take from world, but give," he said to loud applause.

He also assured the diaspora that the country will always be there for them and maintain its ties with the diaspora.

We are not concerned about what PM or his parivar says. India is secular and shall remain secular..To maintain the secular credentials of our country, we may have to sacrifice our lives and we shall do it if required but we wont allow this country to slip into anarchy and a fundamental theological state. We muslims are known for fighting for our rights and in that we prevailed and in India too we shall prevail...Anyone can dream and there is no harm in or penalty for dreaming..Ground realities are different..We cant be intimidated and no one should test our patience....Once sectarian and communal clashes takes place, then we are heading towards disunity and disaster..I wish India would remain secular nation and be pride in it.

When you say India's secularism is strong which means you know very well that in India secularism is in danger. Other wise you would have not expressed your view saying secularism is strong.

Shame on you to say in T.V's 24X7.

Need action in the ground / show in domestic with realities and not in the T.V's and in foreign countries blah, blah, blah.

    Liar Chaaiwaala P.M. of India.

Our PM is aware that he and the BJP will be the biggest losers in the event of a weak secular India.

The RSS, Sadhvis, Bajrang Dal et al has the PMs message sunk into your pea sized brains?

No need for further reassurance Mr.PM. We already have enough reassurance on how strong our secularism is on a regular basis with Ghar wapsi and with words from Hindu Mahasabha's Sadhvi Deva Thakur, RSS's Mohan Bhagwat, Giriraj, Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut and others.
Above all Mr.PM you being a 'Hindu nationalist' instead of an 'Indian nationalist' is enough assurance of your secular credentials. Minorities are 'very comfortable' under your secular leadership. Minorities ke liye achhe din aagaye !

    Declan,

We cant say that Modi endorses what RSS and hindu Mahasabha says or does. Every group has a right and left. These groups can say what ever they want because they have freedom to do so, if people are willing to convert to any religion they can do it. These groups do have some crazy people on the right. They do provide media fodder with their comments. But what they cant do is act upon that.
