Kundapur: Indira case - Women protest, accused led to jail through back door

Kundapur, Apr 14: Even after the police swung into action and arrested an accused who had attempted rape on a pregnant woman at Gopady near here on Saturday evening and crushed her to death with a stone, the relatives and members of the public continue to pour out their anger at the incident.

Victim Indira's house

Even as the 30-month-old son of the late Indira continued to demand to see his mother and younger sister, relatives of Indira and local residents have relentlessly been mobbing the police station since the last three days. The women, whose hearts went out to the inconsolable child's wails, laid siege to the police station here on Monday and demanded that the accused be handed over to them. They also wanted the police to provide a mother to the child to pacify him. Radha Das Kumbhashi, president of Mookambika Union of Women's Associations, led the protesting women.

Although the accused was arrested on Saturday night, the police had not been able to take him to the spot of crime and conduct inquest there as there was the risk of the irate mob that was lying in wait for him trying to lynch him. On Monday evening, the police took him to the spot. As a huge crowd that was waiting to teach a lesson to the culprit tried to attack the accused, the police rushed back with him, and produced him in the court. A few minutes thereafter, the court remanded the accused to 15 days judicial custody.

The relatives of the murdered woman and other women had started to gather in front of the court, on learning that the accused was being produced there. The police, who were apprehensive of the mob indulging in trouble and friction, led the accused to the district jail at Hiriadka through the backdoor of the court.

The house of Prashanth Mogaveera is enveloped in silence. His aunts, who eke out a living by working as agricultural labourers, feel let down and having lost their self respect because of the youth, who had earlier been involved with two cases of theft. His grandfather, who is bed-ridden, is shedding tears. The aunts had caught hold of Prashanth, who they brand as the evil spirit that seems to be hell bent to tarnish the image of their family, and handed him over to the police. The family members too are vehemently demanding the culprit to be hanged immediately. They also have pledged full support including legal help to the distressed family. The aunts, it is learnt, have not consumed any food since the last three days.

In the meanwhile, the police are keeping close watch on the situation. They plan to seek police custody of the accused within a week to conduct spot inspection in the company of the accused and complete this legally mandated formality.

It may be recalled that the people had expressed anguish at the fact that the residence of Indira had not been provided electricity supply on account of Coastal Regulatory Zone rules which prohibit it. As various fishermen's association came out strongly against this injustice, leading philanthropist from the district, Nadoja Dr G Shankar, has promised to provide power supply to this house within two days. The gram panchayat has since issued necessary permission for the same.

In the meanwhile, Radha Das said that about a thousand women will hold protest on Thursday morning under the banner of Mookambika Union of Women's Associations, demanding maximum punishment to the accused.

There is NO religion for any rapist. But it is really very sad to note that the so called Moral Police or organizations from any community is not seen here in support of the poor lady who lost life just because of a lustful individual. He has not killed one, but two! This is very bad and he should be punished.

if the rapist was from minority community our organization people would have pulled out from police station, make him naked, tie him to a motorcycle, drag him in public, beat him, abuse him and his community.. continue till he dies. . fortunately no one is interested because he is not from minority

Where are BD/VHP/RSS netas?. They would have protested loud and clear if the accused would have been from a different community. Why the police is not capable of eliminating such persons from the society through legal route. Shame on the person who is responsible to such vulturous act. He deserves to die at the earliest.

I would have been happy if Bajrang Dal, the morale police and its parivar like VHP, SRS, ABVP led the protest against the rape and cold blooded murder of this woman.. Nay they cant do it..because every accused in rape, murder, drug offense, molestation is from their community is to be considered by default as a member of any one of the above radical association and these group dare not to protest against their own comrade and cadre...Every rapist from major community is a member of BD and its parivar.. its proven and cant be denied

    Shahnavaz,
The police has arrested the accused. They are collecting the evidence and charged him with rape and murder of rarest type. He will be hanged to death.
Now I dont think we have to disrupt the normal lives of common man by protesting on roads. Neither we blame Modi or the central government for this act of crime.
Moreover we do not want anyone to resign, we do not want any organisation or the work place of this rapist to be shut down.
We are reasonable people with our brains exactly i place where it should be.

You don't want to protest, because Police have arrested the culprit!
    OK...
But, at least you can praise Home Minister KJ George for swift arrest of culprit.

Because, whenever police fail to arrest culprits, you blame Home Minister only!!!

Hats off to you for your change in stance on this case as regards protests and bandhs. Where were your brain and sense when your fraternity protested in shimogaa or any other places citing a member of minority community's involvement.. At that time you wer blinded in your eyes and brain and all of a sudden you got enlightenment because the accused happens to be from your fraternity... Am I right???

    JNB Bejai,
In this case no one is protecting the culprits. The household itself helped the police to nab the rapist.
Moreover, the police are not so numb and insensitive to let go the rapists in case more than one are involved. When there is no political/pseudo secular influence on police, I think they will do their duty and the culprit/culprits will be booked.

Do you know the results of the current happening in and around the crime scene? Unless the police are able to get the culprit to the crime scene and match his statements with crime scene evidences, the courts too will be helpless to issue a strong verdict.

You should always make use the brains while commenting or taking a stand on any issue.

I am feeling very emotional and sad to comment for the this news item. For few days i was upset by reading this news.. The community both they belongs have a Strong local sabha (community group) which commands rules and regulation and welfare of the community. Now their leader dr shankar s involvement may bring quick justice to the poor Indira's family. The 30 months child become motherless with cunning act of prashant. Now if any sponsor come forward to adopt the motherless child will be added good work by mankind.

These useless Netas are much more bothered on animal, not on human beings. Cut off his private parts and let him repent and live throught his life. If we hang him, how he will realize and know the pain what the victims family members are going through. Let him realize bas*****

There should be proper enquiry, I respect the sister's from mookambika union of women's association. The fanatic organisation who doesn't look at the humanity which we have seen during nandita case or manipal case have no heart for the sister who was carrying angel in her womb for them the culprits religion is important hence no road shows no band calls, we have to teach lessons to those hypocrites and join the sister's movement to demand maximum punishment to the culprit without any delay.
