Two held with Rs.65 lakh worth gold on Bangladesh border

Kolkata, April 15 (IANS): The Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday arrested two people and seized gold worth nearly Rs.65 lakh on the West Bengal border with Bangladesh, an official said.

The arrests and seizure were made during a special operation by the BSF troopers under the Jayantipur border outpost in North 24-Parganas district.

"A BSF special team intercepted the two and seized 25.5 kg of gold worth nearly Rs.65 lakh, which they had smuggled in from Bangladesh. The two were identified as Amir Mondal and Aser Mondal. Both are residents of Bangaon in North 24-Parganas," a BSF official said.

The two men were later handed over to police, he said.

The BSF on the South Bengal frontier has seized gold worth over Rs.2.30 crore and arrested 11 smugglers so far in the year.

Earlier on Tuesday, the BSF troopers seized 60 CFC gas cylinders worth over Rs.9 lakh from Puttakhali border outpost in the district.

Conducting a special anti-infiltration drive, the BSF has also apprehended 80 Bangladeshi nationals for illegally entering in India.
