Janata Express mishap probe report submitted


Lucknow, April 16 (IANS): The report on probe into the Dehradun-Varanasi Janata Express derailment that killed 39 people on March 20 in Rae Bareli of Uttar Pradesh has been submitted to the railway Board, officials said on Thursday.

In the report submitted on Wednesday by D.K. Singh, chief railway commissioner (south-central division), has inferred that the tragedy happened due to "error in train working".

Sources said the commissioner has detailed how the angle cock of the train malfunctioned, leading to the derailment of the engine and two coaches.

On March 23, he visited the accident site where the angle cock was fund to be jammed.

A senior official said it was due to the jammed angle cock that brakes of other coaches did not work.

During the probe, statements of the station master, the station superintendent, the driver and guard of the Janata Express and 87 others were recorded.

The angle cock was taken to Secunderabad for further investigation.
