Bangladesh court grants bail to BNP leader

Dhaka, April 16 (IANS): The Dhaka High Court on Thursday granted bail to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in one of the cases in which he is accused of violence.

The bench of Justice Md. Nuruzzaman and Justice Zafar Ahmed granted him a six-month bail after hearing his pleas for bail in four separate cases on Thursday, bdnews24.com reported.

It also issued notice to the deputy commissioner of Dhaka district, returnable in two weeks, asking why Alamgir should not be granted bail in the other four cases.

Three of the four cases against the senior BNP leader relate to violence and he has been accused of damaging vehicles, carrying out arson attacks and exploding handmade bombs.

Alamgir, who was arrested on January 6, earlier failed to secure bail from the trial courts, and appealed to the high court this month.
