'India's reformer-in-chief' Modi leads four Indians in Time 100

Washington, Apr 17 (IANS): Headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom President Barack Obama calls "India's reformer-in-chief", four people of Indian origin figure in the Time magazine's list of the World's 100 most influential people this year.

Besides Modi, others on the influential magazine's list of 100 Titans, Pioneers, Artists, Leaders and Icons include Chanda Kochhar, managing director and CEO of ICICI Bank, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadela, and Vikram Patel, co-founder of the NGO Sangath.

In his profile of Modi, the commander-in-chief of the world's most powerful country notes, "As a boy, Narendra Modi helped his father sell tea to support their family.

"Today, he's the leader of the world's largest democracy, and his life story -- from poverty to Prime Ministera -- reflects the dynamism and potential of India's rise," Obama writes.

Reflecting his close relationship with Modi, Obama referring to him by his first name recalls that when "he came to Washington, Narendra and I visited the memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr".

"We reflected on the teachings of King and Gandhi and how the diversity of backgrounds and faiths in our countries is a strength we have to protect," he wrote.

"Prime Minister Modi recognises that more than one billion Indians living and succeeding together can be an inspiring model for the world," Obama wrote.

"Like India, he transcends the ancient and the modern -- a devotee of yoga who connects with Indian citizens on Twitter and imagines a 'digital India'," Obama wrote.

Chanda Kochhar is described by Anshu Jain, co-chief executive officer of Deutsche Bank, as "A banker with vision and reach."

"She has brought India's largest private bank a global vision and impressive returns, while also reaching out to the nation's masses with branches in remote villages where banks simply didn't exist," Jain writes.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is billed as "The turnaround artist" who is "setting Microsoft up for greatness again".

"Changes that once would have been considered blasphemous -- releasing open-source software, building on iOS and Android and even making Windows free in some cases -- are turning Microsoft around," says Aaron Levie, the CEO of Box.

Vikram Patel, co-founder of the NGO Sangath and the Centre for Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is described as a "Well-being warrior".

"He helps spread the simple yet profound idea of mental health for all. He provides hope that mental illness and trauma make us neither weak nor unworthy of love and respect," writes Barbara Van Dahlen, founder of Give an Hour and the Campaign to Change Direction.

The annual TIME 100 issue, the magazine says "tells 100 stories of individual influence. But taken together, these stories are an anthem to interaction, the convergence that occurs when you harmonise a good idea".

For the third straight year, Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai, 17, is the youngest person on the list.

The oldest person on the list is Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, who at 88 finds himself the steward of the Arab world's youngest democracy.

See the fate of Gujarat where Modi was the CM for the last 15 years. Has it changed?? Recently CAG had slammed Gujarat Government for the fake figures projected about the growth of Gujarat. Tel me in which sector Gujarat is leading In India. While he could not build a state how can he build a country. All these romantic tours undertaken by him are useless and have not paid our country anything till now.

What are his reforms ? They are just a copy cat of the Congress schemes and policies. Thats all.

All that Modi is good at is just to make others ULLU.

Guru, in order to improve our global per capita ranking our GDP has to grow many folds considering our vast population and Modi or any other leader for that matter can succeed achieving that. All we need is few more Ambanis and Adanis and we’ll have a huge GDP and NUMERICALLY a large per capita as well. But will that guarantee eradication of poverty ? No way, and that exactly what’s happening today. Money remains with 90 odd super rich and the way things are going, this number is very likely to increase.

GDP does not depend on the wealth of Ambani and Adani, GDP is calculated as per the Prdouctivity increase/decrease, inflation and other parameters. No GDP in the world is calculated as per the wealth of Indivisual.

As the term implies it's gross domestic product. I didn't say it's individual's wealth, but in India's case the wealth produced by the Billionnaire's makes the total wealth or rather exceeds that of rest of the nation.

This is a average per capita income of the country for 2014, you mean to say once Modi took charge as PM the Per capita should automatically increase or do we need to give some time for reforms to happen and then see changes.

Higher GDP will increase the per capita income, that does not mean will be in top 10 in 2015.. Have patience.

Note: Per capita income, also known as income per person, is the mean income of the people in an economic unit such as a country or city. It is calculated by taking a measure of all sources of income in the aggregate (such as GDP or Gross national income) and dividing it by the total population. Which means 30% of indias population are non working (students, children, retired etc), however it is included to calculate per capita income of the country.

I have studied in college years back that 70% of the people in India are engaged in the Agriculture. Under BJP Government, they are focusing only on industries to solve the massive unemployment problem, the 70% farmers with their cattle asset of a few cattle are voiceless under the heaven promising administration. They are mere numbers.

Abdulla, kudos..! that is one sensible and laudable comment I have seen after many days here!.. You have touched upon most of the "INDIAN concepts" that can take us far! ... also, I would suggest, organic farming, and copulsary community service for each youth! ... specially MBBS/ENgineering disciplines/graduates to have one semester IN THE FIELD, where each one of them can be used to nation building!

imagine all graduates doing compulsory data operation, accounts cleaning, to make all land records to govt files in digital format, helping skill development, teaching assistantship, rural healthcare, surveying, road costruction, clearing law cases legal process faster.. this can give them some money in stipend form , also speed up the "rusted system", and more importantly, make them ready for a job scene with "some credible experience- on the job training"! the current process of "projects and industry experience"is a sham!

Probably they have missed history or Amnesia has made them come to this conclusion that it is from Past PMs who had modernized & ushered in reforms including our Past PM Manmohan Singh.
Of course Modi is present PM & influential as long as he remains there, but ones tenure can be judged only after he completes his tenure.
The need for Indian people at present is whether he is influential or not but what their plight is or will be while coporates prosper at the expense of common man which are more influential than any leaders with their money power.

I never had any doubt about Modiji before he took charge as a Prime Minister of India that all World leaders would praise him one day..especially US which did not give him visa to visit USA..He proved me right..He visited many countries where previous PMs didn't land their foot for 45 years to keep good relationship..Modi haters started accusing him that he spent crores of rupees for sight seeing ! haa..haa..Same people did not understand that it is not the AMOUNT..but OUTCOME matters..Praise from US,UK,Canada,German,France Presidents is enough to convince who Modi is and what Modi is !!

Note: Mr.Modi should give more importance to Home Minister Rajnath Singh than BJP President Amit Shah..If he listens to Mr.Shah for each and everything then he will land up in trouble..Rajnath Singhji is a matured, disciplined respected leader..Now I heard that Mr.Shah is interfering in Home Minister's affairs..Not a good sign..
