Has Rahul Gandhi shot himself in the foot?

By Amulya Ganguli

Apr 18 (IANS): Unlike the Biblical tale of a prodigal son, the return of a foot-loose family member may not be a cause of great joy to his relatives. In Rahul Gandhi's case, it can be a source of embarrassment and misgivings.

The embarrassment is likely to be caused by speculation about where the not-so-young prince was for nearly two months, what he learnt during the days away from the madding crowd, and whether his ruminations - he is supposed to have taken a course in meditations (vipasana) - have eased the tensions caused by the setbacks suffered by his party from 2013.

On the other hand, the misgivings will be the result of the belief that the heir-apparent has played his last card and that there will be nothing new up his sleeve if the Congress fails to recover from its present dire straits.

It is clear that there is no scope for any more dramatic, if peevish, antics. Rahul Gandhi has to either deliver, which means playing a palpable role in reviving the party's fortunes, or fade away.

That the first task will not be easy is evident from the humiliating defeat which one of the Congress's top guns in Maharashtra, Narayan Rane, has suffered in a Mumbai by-election which cannot be glossed over by the party's success in an Uttarakhand contest.

After all, both Rane's stature and the importance of India's financial capital make the Mumbai outcome a special case.

It can also seem odd that one of Rahul Gandhi's first public appearances will be at a farmers' rally on the land acquisition law since he was expected to lead the party's charge on the issue when parliament was in session. Instead, he disappeared from sight.

For the farmers, therefore, his act of returning to the fray not long after getting off a flight after a long stay abroad can seem like that of a fly-by-night operator who cannot be taken seriously.

Apart from Rahul Gandhi's curious travelling habits, what may seem like an uphill task to his supporters are the dissenting voices in the Congress which show that there are party members who have begun to look at him more as a liability than as an asset.

Till now, it was an occasional relatively unknown politician calling him a "joker" or another urging mother and son to take a two-year break, which made news. But now, partymen of much greater importance have begun speaking out.

They range from former Congress M.P. Sandeep Dikshit, who had earlier blamed "elitists" for bringing the party to its present pass, to former Punjab chief minister Amrinder Singh, who believes that the time is not ripe for Rahul Gandhi to take charge because he is not experienced enough.

Similarly, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit's assertion that the cadres' comfort level with Sonia Gandhi is still high is an indirect endorsement of Amrinder Singh's reservations about the heir-apparent.

Therefore, if Rahul Gandhi thought that by absenting himself, he will jolt the party into realizing his indispensability, he may be in for a surprise because what has happened is that his Houdini act has emboldened those in the party who had never thought much of him but had refrained from speaking out.

It is these tremors which appear to have persuaded the Congress to put off Rahul Gandhi's coronation for a later date - probably September - when it was earlier expected that he will don the party president's mantle by April.

The expectation among his supporters probably is that over the next few months, the shock and awe as well as the amusement caused by Rahul Gandhi's vanishing trick will subside.

It is also possible that a rejuvenated vice president will come out with all guns blazing, starting with the farmer's rally, and a more active role in parliament.

Unfortunately, what cannot be discounted is that the chances are that such a proactive role will expose his limitations rather than establish his leadership credentials. If his one major pre-election TV interview is taken as an example, the Congress vice president has a few set ideas beyond which he can get lost - as he sometimes does with his written notes.

His ideas revolve round the belief that India is a poor country which makes it necessary for the government to play the role of the nanny. As his intervention in a Congress conclave, where he called for raising the cap on cooking gas cylinders from nine to 12, showed, Rahul Gandhi favours the politics of doles and subsidies.

If this is contrasted with the "reformer-in-chief" - in Barack Obama's words - Narendra Modi's appeal to the well-off to surrender their gas cylinders, then it is obvious that Rahul Gandhi inhabits a different world from that of the prime minister. To the Congress vice president, economic reforms have little meaning.

Since Rahul Gandhi's views reflect those of the Left, it has to be seen where he will meditate over a possible link between the decline of the communist parties and of the Congress.

What cannot but engage Rahul's attention in the coming days, therefore, is not only the matter of those who think that he is not ready for the top job but also the need to clarify his economic ideas. Lessons in oriental mysticism may not of much help in this respect.

Welcome back Rahul, the opposition's only priority and concern whether in power or opposition has been Congress and the Gandhi fly. Seething with jealousy cos of the lineage. Look at RG's smiling, humble disposition compared to arrogance, pride , swollen headedness. Its not good to run down anyone - shows ones character. Rahul is hardworking and dedicated. So what if he went on leave, not like our NRI PM , never in the country - Gautam Adani, PM Modi's constant companion on overseas trips, needs support system.

It appears the author of this article got his foot in the mouth. History speaks of congress throwing up excellent leaders to lead the nation outside the Gandhi family and because of Gandhi family. It is not necessary that a leader should serve the nation as a Prime Minister. Leading the party and implementing pro people policies is also leadership and service. Tomorrow if Congress gets 3/4ths majority and Rahul refuses to be the PM, there is no surprise as he can nominate a seasoned politician to serve the nation as PM. I do not understand when the media will understand that being the PM of the nation is not what service is all about. Such stupid ideas can generate from corrupt and incompetent minds. It is better not to be a PM when we see our present PM going about the world telling them India is a Scam filled country - the worst post independent scam being the "Kargill Coffin Scam" by the then NDA government of Mr Vajpayee. They made money from coffins purchased for the dead in the Kargill war.

You seems to be away from facts. Yes to serve people one need not be a PM. But as MP for over 10 years what was his achievement? do you know he has such poor attendance or no questions to ask? and you expect miracles all of a sudden just because you don't like someone else? When his own party men have realized his thinking capacity, you seem to be so desparate to see him as a leader.. We too love cong.. but why only him? don't they have any better candidates? i agree that the money saved by voluntary surrendering of LPG subsidy is very less, but there is a vision.

need of the day is think beyond subsidy.

did you congress ever though of any governance of vision ? as mentioned in this well written article, everytime congress thinks thant india is poor contry.

but reality it is not india is not poor but indian mentality is poor. we want everything for free. we want a person of our caste ( if possible from our family !!) as mla/dc/rto. dont you think that this bloody caste system is spoiling india ?

womens emporement, the only slogan by RAGA during election rallies.. he may not be knowing how many states are there in india, forget about ground reality of the nation.

still there were blind supporters for him, now the same people are telling that he is young..

india is not poor country. we have manpower... let us dedicate ourself to nation by not accepting subsidies / not wasting resources / not doing dirty politics /not involving communal issues/ not working with biased ideas / not supporting moral policing / allowing govt to do development of infrastucture.

at least if not possible dont become anti nationals like alam bhat / hurriath, etc who are biting the feeding india deliberately.

Congress is in a peculiar situation. Everybody knows that Rahul cannot deliver and Sonia's best days are over. Congress has good leaders, but without Gandhis, they cannot hold the party together.
UPA style functioning with Rahul/ Sonia as party heads and some other leader as PM candidate is still possible, but Congress must clear the wide spread belief that many including the top leaders are corrupt.
Alternative to Congress like the recent formation of Janata Parivar will be the worst remedy for India.

i will tell u the truth.sonia was like rahul only when she started heading congress and she is still the same.but how she managed the show for 10 years?

answer is, all the govt management for the past 10 years was done by master administrator pranab mukerjee who also was crucial pin in indira gandhi govt(as he himself said in his book), chidambaram, hansraj baradwaj, ahmed patel(he still runs the party) etc.

these people are expert politicos and know the pulse of people and how to run the party.
but rahul doesnt have the team which knows the pulse of the nation or running party or govt and are immatured and confused like himself.

so chances of him having managing his party are dim as he or his sister are not lucky as his mom to inherit a strong and experienced team.

    one more thing:

1:congress under sonia came to power as people wanted to give her a chance and to know what she is?

2:then bjp leaders did not evoke too much confidence in them as vajpeyee was already ill during the end of his term and they did not had a intelligent core team.yashwant sinha was a confused fm who made blunders after blunders and finally had to be booted by vajpeyee.

most of my relatives even though bjp supporters voted for congress during 2004 and 2009 not due to sonia gandhi but due to presence of stalwarts like pranab mukerjee, chidambaram etc who were nationalists, had economic understanding of the nation and experience and had were withal to rescue the country from any crisis.now these leaders era is over.

even now bjp dont have the leaders who have capability to run the nation or have leadership qualities except modi.

everyone know modi has all these qualities,so we elected him.
other than modi there is no one leader in bjp or congress currently who have the capability to inspire confidence in citizens and have ability to rescue the nation from economic and other crisis godforbid may have to face in future.

rahul gandhi and his party or for that matter bjp without modi does not inspire confidence among citizens.

we cant predict the future as we never know a new leader may emerge from now where same like modi has emerged in any of the parties.

Don't worry! Congress loss is a blessing in disguise.
Weak congress, and loss of face to secular parties will compel them to re-organize and forge alliance.
Lost parties will invent means of survival. All will not close shop.
In every adversity there is an opportunity.

Rahul Gandhi is not experienced enough to run a big party like congress and he is incapable of it. He should only remain as a party worker.
