Sri Lankan artist's ideas on peace in Kolkata exhibition

Kolkata, April 18 (IANS): Ideas exploring concepts of freedom and space, captured through oil paintings by a Sri Lankan artist, will go on display at an exhibition beginning here on April 24, the organisers said on Saturday.

Titled 'Sithuvili' (thoughts in Sinhalese), the solo exhibition running till April 27 showcases 10 oil-on-canvas paintings by Lasantha Karunaratne, who studied art at the Fine Arts School in Nantes, France.

"She considers herself to be a self-taught artist and believes in continuous experimentation. Lasantha prefers to work on large canvases which gives her the freedom to express in a free flowing and almost poetic manner. This is her first outing in Kolkata," a GalleriaM official (the organisers) told IANS.

Her works depict everyday objects but are not simply abstract. They are an interplay of vibrant colours, shapes and retain an element of emptiness and serenity, according to the organisers.

The artist will be in the city's art gallery to interact with the enthusiasts.
