Siddaramaiah turns tables on BJP leaders

Bengaluru, Apr 21 (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday tried to turn the tables on the aggressive BJP on reconstituting Bengaluru municipal area by dissolving the BBMP, saying that the previous BJP governments, too, had supported the move.

“When Jagadish Shettar was the chief minister, he had stated that trifurcation of Bengaluru is necessary in order to provide better services to people. The then urban development minister S Suresh Kumar had advocated the need for smaller corporations saying that administration of 198 wards of the BBMP by a commissioner was difficult,” the chief minister stated by quoting newspaper clippings.

Siddaramaiah, who was replying to Opposition attack on introducing an amendment bill to reconstitute the Bengaluru municipal area, sought to know from the principal Opposition BJP why it has changed its stand. Several of the ruling party members taunted the Opposition by describing it as ‘U-turn BJP.’ Shettar and Suresh Kumar, however, did not make much effort to defend themselves.

“Do not try to find fault with us. Cooperate with us in this initiative. It is in the interest of Bengaluru. The BBMP was in a bad state. There was large-scale misappropriation of funds, property tax collection was not done efficiently and civic services were not provided to people properly,” he said.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra said Bengaluru had acquired disrepute as garbage city because of mismanagement by the BBMP. Image of brand Bengaluru was dented because of this problem. The BBMP was too big and unwieldy to govern. The government therefore took it seriously. “It is an opportunity to set things right before elections are held. The government intends to ensure effective participation of citizens in local government,” he added.

He tried to allay fears that the move to constitute two or more corporations by doing away with the BBMP would affect brand Bengaluru, saying that Bengaluru city will remain as it is. New corporations will be constituted purely for the administrative reasons, he added.

Lexy, when you Land in Bangalore please dont sit on a Meru Cab or Airport Taxi and go straight on the KIA - MG Road and stay in Taj Hotel on MG Road . Please do visit the place under the Fly over leading from Outer Ring road Hebbal towards KR Puram .Please do not go from the top but pass from beneath .To get fresh in Bangalore you will have to go to KR Market or Shivaji Nagar .You will just love it . There is no need of perfumes or sprays. You get fresh perfume of rotten garbage which is natural .Get some people from Australia. They will never come back to this city nor eat meat and fish .Anyways , please visit all the interior residential areas , Ring roads etc and stay for long . Swine Flu is also on a rise .

    Lexy Saldhana,

Can U tell the readers of DW when did U visit Bangalore last. Read carefully what Mr. Kiran from Bangalore has commented. Do U know how many Crores of Rupees meant for Development has been misappropriated by BBMP officials during their 5 year tenure. 198 Corporators in the BBMP offices enjoying with the tax payers money sitting idle in their offices doing nothing. Every where U will find Garbage thrown on the sides of Main streets & our Holy Cows r let out freely on the main streets & these Holy Cows r Grazing in these heaps of Garbage. Street lights r not functioning properly at all during night time. Except the Old Airport Road, where I stay, all other Roads & Streets r full of Potholes. Revenue officers in the BBMP r neither bothered to collect the tax nor understate state the amount, while collecting the tax. What election U r talking about. Do Election commission have proper records of Voters & who r going to vote them? Do U want us to elect these lazy, Corrupt Corporators continue to serve from our Civic Body.

According to me and a resident living in Bangalore , Trifurcation of the BBMP is really required . Milan , Malcolm, Lexy and the remaining people who have commented are not Living in Bangalore and do not know the problems of this place . What chief Minister said is very true . There are heaps and heaps of Garbage in the city in the residential areas and uncleared for days . The BBMP has no place to dump nor any waste management in place . Currently the BBMP in Bangalore under BJP Ruling with no support given to Swacch Bharath . Modi is let down by his own party in Bangalore .

The BBMP has found a good solution to clear the garbage is by setting fire for the garbage . If Daijiworld is able to put the pictures of garbage heaps set on fire and dumped on ring roads then sure I will be ready to provide hundreds of them . Only the road and the either sides of Airport road to MG Road is maintained well . what about the remaining part of the city ? No drainage, no sewage , no garbage collection etc is the problem that we are facing . It really true that BBMP Trifurcation is the need of the hour . Its a good move by the present government .

    Good Initiative by Siddu Govt.

People who are commenting here are enot familiar with the issues plaguing BBMP.

Bangalore is one of the most populated metropolitan cities in the world with a population of well over 8 million whereas Mangalore's MCC handles a population of only over 5 Lakhs.

Trifurcation of BBMP is imperative inorder to provide better civic facilities and plan this mega city's growth inorder to bring it on par with other world class cities.

CM Siddu, you really want to turn tables on BJP and prove yourself, then go for election of BBMP, and show your guts, that will shut BJP's mouth.
But you know, everyone knows in Bengaluru & Karnataka that your congress will be defeated in those polls, that is why you are playing delay tactics, wait for tomorrow, Karnataka High court will give its verdict on announcement of BBMP elections.
Good luck Peddu, we mean Siddu.

When any Law or move which is beneficial to all common man (not attributed to any particular community for vote bank) should be followed even though it was initiated by Opposition held previous Govt

Constitution of two or more corporations if BBMP is too big to govern in the present set up, then it is a step in right direction.
If objective is better governance and setting the things right then definitely 2 more corporations are imperative, instead of keeping Bangalore as garbage city under BBMP.

    Siddu,

Take same logic and divide state into 3 parts...for better administration...and to reduce corruption...

More you try to avoid BBMP elections...more likely High Court forces elections through your throat...

If elections are held in May...I think CONgress will know where it stands in people's court...since they know they will be soundly defeated...Siddu and Company making this Circus.
