Kasargod: Cop crushed under police jeep's wheels

Kasargod, Apr 21: A policeman here suffered serious injuries after a police jeep accidentally moved over his body after he fell on the road.

The official, Janardana Naik from Kuntalumoole working at Badiadka police station, later died in a hospital in Mangaluru.

At around 5.45 pm on Monday April 20, the policemen had seized a scooter at Pilamkatte after finding that it was not backed by documents. The scooter was being driven by Janardana Naik towards Badiadka station, while the police jeep was following him. When the scooter was passing by Artipalla bus stand, Naik applied brakes after observing that passengers were crossing the road after alighting from a bus. He however, lost control over the two-wheeler and fell on the road. Instantly, the jeep following him moved over his body before he could get up, critically injuring him.

Naik, who suffered severe head injuries, was immediately taken in the police jeep and admitted into a private hospital here. However, in view of the precariousness of his condition, he was advised to be treated at Mangaluru. He was taken to Mangaluru and admitted into a hospital there. But he could not be saved. He breathed his last on Tuesday April 21, it is gathered.

    Why take the scooter away? If scooter is not backed up with documents and a stolen/lost scooter doesn't match with the said scooter, if the driver of such a scooter is a person who's identity and residence can be verified, such a person should let go with a fine and should be made to follow course of legal action to provide necessary document. Such a law would have saved a precious life.

    I think he wasn't wearing a helmet. And why was he riding a vehicle without documents on a public road. Needs through investigation.

    Its sad news. Unfortunately we do not learn from mistake. As someone said the confiscated vehicles should be towed away. I cant understand one thing. When he approached the bus stop and stopped for the passengers to cross.. wait!! when you see the bus stop and see passengers crossing don't you slow down in advance?? Why you have to wait until the last minute and break abruptly to cause that fall. He might not had the helmet but the jeep behind him should have stopped when the scooter stopped but it is India, when a vehicle in front of us stops, we don't want to look for the reason but overtake it from any side possible.

    EVERY ONE KNOWS TWO WHEELER DO NOT HAVE BALANCE IN SLOW SPEED AND ON STANDING IT NEED A SUPPORT KEEP BALANCE BUT 4 WHEEL DRIVERS DO NOT CONSIDER THE TWO WHEELER RIDER'S SAFETY AND KILL THEM WITH THEIR OVER SIZE,WEIGHT AND OVER TAKING HIGH SPEED, WRONG SIDE. THIS RELATIVE SPEED SHOULD LIMITED TO 20 KM PER HOUR FOR SAFETY REASON . MAN, YOUR COST IS MORE THAN ANY MONEY VALUE , PLEASE THINK OF IT, FOR GOD SAKE AND SAVING OF A HUMAN LIFE. DO NOT JUST KILL LIKE DOGS AND RATS ON ROAD. POLICE MUST GIVE ALARM ON OVER SPEED NOT SIMPLE HORN.

    RIP,
    Our system still following century old system to take away confiscated vehicles or scooters.
    They need to seize it where it is and call recover vehicle either belongs to police dept or contract hire yearly basis.
    May be he was no wearing helmet too.

    Sad news.
    Please pay best compensation for his family.

    I know that many policemen do not vote since they are on duty on that day of voting. Still give them the best compensation for death while on duty.
