India provides assistance over Madagascar hurricane


New Delhi, April 21 (IANS): India has provided assistance of $200,000 to Madagascar in response to a request for assistance following devastation caused by hurricane Chezda which hit the island nation in January.

The external affairs ministry said in a release on Tuesday that the Indian ambassador handed over a cheque for the disaster relief to Madagascar's Foreign Minister Mme Beatrice Atallah last week.

"The government of India has provided a cash assistance of $200,000 to the government of Madagascar under Aid to African countries programme in response to a request for assistance to mitigate the consequences of hurricane 'Chezda' which hit the island nation in January 2015," the release said.

It said that in her acceptance remarks, Atallah conveyed the gratitude of the Madagascar government for the assistance provided by India.
