Udupi, Apr 21: Two elderly, malnourished sisters have been rescued by Vishu Shetty Ambalpady, a social worker. This was revealed at a press meet held on Tuesday at Brahmagiri here.

Narsi (55) and Muttu (57) were living in abject poverty in a house at Pithrody for over two decades without anyone to take care of their needs.

Vishu Shetty said that he came to know of the plight of the two sisters through a phone call he received on Monday April 20 night at around 8 pm. He then rushed to the sisters' house to Pithrody, Udyavar along with Bhavani Shankara Bajana Mandali members.

The rescued women who belong to the Dalit community lived in a very dark and dusty room. They were depressed due to lack of nutrition, poverty and had no one to take care of them. For the past 20 years, they had been living in the house surviving on little food. Narsi had a husband for a short time while Muttu is unmarried. They do not have any source of income for their livelihood.

Both sisters used to take portions of food from their neighbours and Rs 5-10 from others at times. The present home is made of mud bricks. The roof is completely worn out. Neighbours helped to rescue them from their house.

At first they refused to speak openly to Vishu, but after some time they opened up to him. He then took them by ambulance to the district hospital at Ajjarkad, where they were examined.
