Mangaluru, Apr 22: District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai has revealed that the work on concreting of Shiradi Ghat will be complete by the end of May and vehicular traffic will be allowed from June.

He was speaking to reporters at Marnahalli near Sakleshpur after inspecting the work being done on the stretch covering a distance of 13.26 kilometres connecting Heggadde near Sakleshpur with Kempu Hole.

Rai said that 43 percent of the road work, which had been taken up at a cost of Rs 69.90 crore, is complete. The work on 69 culverts and four minor bridges have been completed. The work on laying dry lane concrete has been done on 9.90 kilometer stretch on left hand side and 9.10 kilometer stretch on the right hand side of the road.

The laying of granular sub base (GSB) has been completed on 10.84 kilometre, while the sub grade preparation has been completed on 10.84 kilometre stretch of the road.

Second Phase

For the second phase of the work, two bidders have applied to take up the work on 13 kilometre stretch of concrete from Kempu Hole to Addahole and 21 kilometre of asphalting from Gulagalale Marnahalli. The technical bid meeting which will be held in New Delhi on this Friday will finalise the tender. The estimated cost of the work is Rs 82.28 crore.

The road will not be closed for the second phase of the work, Rai said.

The work on side pitching, sign boards and crash barriers will be taken up in the month of June. As apart of the work on the stretch, pavement quality concrete (PQC), or final finishing work has been laid on 1.60 kilometre stretch. The PQC is laid only during night as it requires temperature of 30 degree Celsius. In a single day, about 800 metre PQC will be laid, which will require 27 days to complete the entire stretch. The cost of every cubic metre of PQC is Rs 10,800.

For every 4.5 metre of the stretch, groove cutting is done to check development of cracks on the road.

The contractor Ocean Constructions has procured slipform sensor paver at an estimated cost of Rs 6.5 crore for the road work.6,500 loads of gravel, 3,500 loads of sand, 1.35 lac bags of cement and 800 tonnes of steel will be utilised for the laying of the road, it is learnt.

A batch mixing plant has been set up at Marnahalli to mix the concrete and supply to the road work.

Everytime, any news on this so-called national highway gets the highest remarks, more or less extremely negative!
Key observation:with both the most corrupt parties in power in state or centre, its the helpless oublic who will endlessly suffer.
Everyone knows that these pot-belly'd corrupt politicians fly biz class between the two cities while ruthlessly looting the state of 1000s of crores! If only they had 1% of genuine concern for real, decade old issues?

Difference here is that BJP at center did not discriminate between C'gress and BJP state. Money comes from the center and not from state coffers. But I do admit that BJP MLAs and MPs could have made more noise and blocked the road completely to bring this up before public.

    Mr. Abdulla
It seems you just done with reading the story 'Alice in Wonderland'.
Although i admire and appriciate your thoughts on the insight you have on how the roads should be, we should remind ourselves that we are in a great land called India.
Everything is there and marked on the plan or blue print but in reality there is nothing except a couple of stones / rocks where compactors are also not used and a couple of layers of cement or asphat. That's all it is. FYG, when we have politicians who cannot be held to account there is nothing much anyone can do. Cheers Buddy....Have an amber fliud

It is ironical that the Minister visits the 8 month old ‘white-elephant’ project for a mere 28 KMs stretch, on the day the Japanese Bullet Train broke the 600 KMs per hour speed record.
The so-called concrete work on just a short stretch of the critical highway connecting the coastal areas with Bangalore has already beaten all global records by completing 8 months at a cost overrun of 88 crores! Now expected to be completed at a cost of around 200 crores in total for both stretches between Heggadde and Kempu Hole within next 6 months with a astonishing total time of a year and a half, the minister’s pot belly and that of the contractors speak volumes of the inefficiency and corruption prevalent in our society and state.
Considering the costs involved and extraordinary time needed for a mere 25 to 30 Kms of the highway, in any other country, one would have had a 4 segregated-lane super highway, with steel-reinforced concrete roads with proper footpath and other safety facilities across the entire highway from Blr to Mlr!
Regretfully, despite the notorious petty-trader turned controversial minister, Gadkari being in charge of highways and surface transport, none of the BJP MLA’s or MPs from the state or coastal belt have voiced any concern on this top priority project or continued sufferings of people.
