Kundapur, Apr 22: In a vindictive act, two brothers allegedly set fire to their aunt's house at Nelyadi Aralikatte near Teggarse in Byndoor. The incident happened even as the aunt's family was away for her son's wedding ceremony on Wednesday April 22.

The brothers were later arrested by Byndoor police along with their uncle for allegedly abetting the crime. They were reportedly consuming alcohol in a bar to celebrate their misdeed at the time of the arrest.

The arrested are identified as Nelyadi Aralikatte residents Rajesh Shetty alias Rajendra(32), his brother Raghavendra Shetty (30) and their maternal uncle Rangayya (75).

Around three or four cousins have their houses in Aralikatte. Nagamma Shedthi and Sushilamma Shedthi are staying in one of these houses. The accused Rajendra and his brother Raghavendra stay in a house next to them. There used to be constant fights between the two families over an issue related to the road. The wedding of Subhaschandra Shedthi, son of Sushila, was held with a girl from Uppunda at Ram Laxman Hall in Katbelthoor on Wednesday April 22. The family members had gone to the wedding leaving Kaveri Mogaveera to guard the house.

Rajesh and Raghavendra, after observing that there was nobody in the house, came to the verandah, threatened to kill Kaveri Mogaveera, and after entering the house by breaking open the door, they damaged the furniture and set fire to the house. Shocked at the incident, Kaveri Mogaveera started screaming.

Though locals came rushing and extinguished the fire, the TV, bed, furniture, and pictures of deities were gutted, causing a loss of Rs 2 lac, police sources said.

The police said the duo had also been involved in several crimes in the past. About one-and-a-half months ago, they spent 10 days in jail for threatening people by wielding a dagger and creating trouble. They had also caused a commotion by locking a temple in Nelyadi at night in January 2015.

A case has been registered in Byndoor police station.
