Four months after self-immolation bid, unemployed woman dies

Chandigarh, April 25 (IANS): An unemployed woman who had set herself ablaze outside the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here in December last year has died, police said on Saturday.

Gurpreet Kaur, who hailed from Gurdaspur district, had set herself ablaze outside Badal's residence in the high-security Sector 2 on December 12 after she was not allowed to meet him.

She was admitted to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16 with over 20 percent burns. Police said the woman was in hospital since December.

Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa condoled the death.

"She was unemployed and had knocked on every door to get a job. It is unfortunate that people had to take the extreme step of committing self-immolation after having failed to move the state rulers. The Badal government has become immune to the problems concerning the people," Bajwa said in a statement.
