'Infrastructure development key focus of NDA government'

Kolkata, April 25 (IANS): Infrastructure development which will lead to economic growth is a key focus for the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said here on Saturday.

"Infrastructure is a national priority and we'll offer the enabling environment to attain its development," Sinha told media persons while attending an event here.

He said the country needs investment to the tune of nearly $1,000 billion-$2,000 billion over the next 5-10 years to attain the desired level of infrastructural development in India and his government will create the suitable "enabling environment".

According to the minister, the infrastructure development model in the past -- utilising bank finance and pubic-private partnership -- has not been very successful owing to issues involving land acquisition, fuel linkage challenges for power plants and other factors.

Private investors found these (factors) difficult to handle, he said.
