President condoles deaths in quake


New Delhi, April 25 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday condoled the deaths due to the earthquake in India and spoke with the governors of the affected states to inquire about the relief operations being undertaken.

In letters written to the governors of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim, Mukherjee said: "I am sad to learn about the loss of lives, injuries and damage to property caused by the earthquake today in many states.

"My thoughts are with all those affected by this natural calamity. I understand rescue and relief operations are currently underway. I am sure the state government and other agencies are taking necessary steps to provide all possible help to the bereaved families who have lost their near and dear ones," he said.

Mukherjee asked the governors to convey his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. "I wish speedy recovery to the injured persons."

The earthquake has claimed the lives of 900 people in Nepal and 36 in India.
