IAF undertakes evacuation in Nepal, 250 Indians flying home


New Delhi, April 26 (IANS): An Indian Air Force helicopter on Sunday carried out five casualty evacuation sorties in quake-hit Nepal as over 250 Indians were being brought back to India.

Defence ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar tweeted that the MI-17 chopper of the IAF carried out "five casualty evacuation sorties in Nepal. Injured people moved to military hospitals".

External affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted: "More Indians return home. A C-17 with 52 passengers and IL-76 with 200 passengers en-route to Delhi."

He provided more helplines: "Assam Bhawan number: 011-26116444, 26877111" for queries regarding the earthquake, which has claimed over 2,000 lives in Nepal.

Over 1,500 people were killed and thousands were injured when a massive earthquake and several strong aftershocks caused widespread destruction in Nepal.

The quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit Nepal on Saturday. A fresh quake rocked the country on Sunday afternoon.
