44 killed as rain and storm lashes Pakistan


Islamabad, April 27 (IANS): At least 44 people were killed and over 200 injured following heavy rain and windstorm in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, media reported on Monday.

At least 17 mm rain was recorded on Sunday in Peshawar and adjacent areas, while strong winds ran as high as 110 kmph.

Wind and heavy downpour caused collapse of house walls and ceilings. Beside,trees and poles fell in Nowshehra, Akbarpura and other areas located on the outskirts of Peshawar, Geo News reported.

Similar incidents were also reported in Charsadda Road, Badho Sumar Bagh and Badhni areas.

The injured women and children have been shifted to hospitals, rescue officials said.

Rescue work is still underway in the affected areas. However, the rescue services faced difficulties due to the incessant rain and strong winds.

The meteorological department has forecast more heavy downpour with windstorm over the next 24 hours in Malakand, Hazara and Peshawar city areas.
