Udupi: Tipper laden with JCB topples on car near Padubidri - One dead

Udupi, Apr 27: One person died and two others were injured as a JCB placed on a tipper lorry came crashing down on their car. The incident took place on national highway 66 at Tenkar Garodi, Yermal near Padubidri here.

The deceased has been identified as Vittal Nayak (58).

Nayak and two others were travelling in a Swift Desire, driven by Nayak, when tipper lorry carrying a JCB, approaching from the opposite direction, rammed into their car, rolled over, and the JCB fell on it. The tipper was moving from Udupi toward Mangaluru.

The car was completely damaged, and it was initially assumed that there were casualties. The locals who rushed to the rescue of the car passengers put in hours of efforts to lift the tipper and the JCB off the car.

After two failed attempts, the locals finally managed to free the car and pull out the car driver and the other two passengers. They were rushed to hospital

Among the three, Nayak who sustained serious injuries passed away while other two are out of danger.

Following the accident, the national highway was blocked for nearly two-and-a-half hours.

Padubidri police arrived at the spot and registered a case.

    Please restrict the heavy loaded vehicles on these roads widening section . Drivers over age of 60 years having health problems should be restricted to drive for long distances.

    RTO has to stop this tippers shifting excavators. RTO has to issue guidelines to transport this in low bed prim-overs.

    Vittalanna a very known person to me. He use to come to Airport to pick-me. 11th May, he is going to perform his sons wedding. Very sad news that he is no more. RIP.

    The tipper lorry carrying is not a JCB excavator, As per the picture it is Tata Hitachi crawler excavator.

    Again a proof of logic in a third world country. Even a fool in a developed country can understand the need and logic behind transporting heavy machinery / equipment on a 'Low Bed Trailer'. In developed countries such equipment / machinery can be transported only during hours of curfew with an 'Oversize Load' Pilot / Escort. More over the route to transport will be given by the transport dept. after checking overhead power lines. Well in India we cannot expect all this but a 'Low Bed Trailer' is the least what we need. In this scenario, the heaviest part of the excavator (Counter weights) is higher than the highest part of the transport vehicle (tipper). Simple law of physics tells us that the higher the heavy load more the chances of tipping over and in this case 'Up see Daisy'.

    Just to add to my earlier comment, such accidents have happened in the past, has happened now (this one) and will happen again in future. We still do not learn any lessons out of this. One man's life is tragically cut short because of one ill-educated truck driver and careless administrators but what is even more sad is that more lives will be lost and it is just fate that who the victim will be. Human life is very cheap in India

    I also of the opinion that Excavators should not be transported on truck, as the width of excavator is more than truck and slight sliding of excavator causes toppling of both truck and excavator due to imbalance. But ours is a poor country we can not have spl trucks. Then the driver must be careful and drive very slow.

    The main issue is with reckless overtaking of faster moving vehicles especially the buses and the cars,these vehicles disturb the heavier vehicles such as trucks and cause them to lose control...if this kind of reckless driving is stopped and smooth overtaking of sensitive vehicles are initiated our roads will be a lot safer...A lot of awareness needs to be created with this issue.

    This is totally failed policy in traffic law.
    Any heavy equipment's should be transported only through "LAW BED TRAILER" depends upon the capacity of vehicle.
    Tippers should be used for the purpose of which it meant for i.e.only for dumping mud,sand like wise.
    Cars and similar vehicles should be transported through 'RECOVERY' vehicle.
    Insurance companies should be very strict as per international law: 'vehicle should be used for which purpose for it meant for'.
    Many Insurances are not even covered for OFF-ROAD used vehicles unless it is specified in insurance clause.
    Our government should be strict in policy,law making.
