Udupi, Mar 17: A day-long National Highway 17 bundh call given by Nagarjuna antagonists has been mostly successful in the entire district on Saturday March 17.
Though call was primarily to block National Highway 17, people have closed down their shops and business concerns even in interior areas such as Shirva, Padubidri, Yellur, Pangla, Shankerpura etc.
In Katapadi town shops are open, rickshaws are plying. So too private vehicles such as mobikes, cars etc are plying. However, neither the service buses to the rural areas nor express buses to Mangalore are plying.
Bundh has been very peaceful so far with no untoward incident reported. Heavy police force has been beefed up.
Though bundh has received good support, buses are plying to Manipal from the city. So also express buses to Karkala and to Mangalore via Karkala are plying without interruption.
But on National Highway 17 only two-wheelers and cars are plying. There no buses plying to Brahmavar, Kunadapur, Kemman or any other areas on and beside the NH 17.
As reported earlier the bundh call has jointly been given by Nagarjuna Virodhi Samiti along with Nandijur Janajagruti Samiti against the setting-up of Nagarjuna Thermal Power Plant at Nandikur near Padubidri.
Many of the like-minded organizations too have extended their support to the bundh along with fishermen from the coastal belt.
