When Udupi police used guns and grenades to control 'mob'

Udupi, Apr 28: The Parade ground here witnessed 'lathi charge' and 'firing' by police on Tuesday April 28 as a mob assembled at the ground holding placards in 'protest'.

But none of it was real. It was all a part of scientific demonstration on 'mob operation', a mock drill conducted by the Udupi district police to test the preparedness and hone the skills of its staff in controlling mobs and large crowds.

Addressing media persons, superintendent of police (SP) Annamalai said, "It is a demo on crowd control. The police team is shown how to take measures to control mobs step by step."

Initially, some individuals in a mock protest came forward with reasonable demands, and then went on to make unreasonable demands. As the 'protest' intensified, the mob control squad was instructed to lathi charge, use tear gas, grenades, smoke shells and dye marker grenades, Annamalai said.

A trained squad also demonstrated how the police can fire to disperse an unruly mob if the situation went out of control. "We are doing this for the benefit of the public, and it is a measure taken to understand the public," Annamalai said.

The district canine squad also demonstrated its skills and preparedness.

"A new police vehicle named 'Garuda' has been introduced to observe public behaviour in crowds. The vehicle has been set up with cameras directly linked to Udupi police control room," Annamalai said.

He said he felt proud of Uday, one of the police officers under him who participated in the national security guard training camp held at Haryana.

Similar mock drills will also be conducted next in Kundapur and other sub-divisions, the SP informed.

Describing the devices used to control mobs, the SP said that stun granede makes a loud sound while tear gas shells are used to stimulate tears in the eyes. The dye marker grenade sprays irritant gas as well as colour over people. The colour takes 10 days to fade, which helps police to recognize a person who was present at the spot easily, he said.

SI Shrikanth, Santhosh Kumar and others were present during the demo.

It appears improvements happening with Police Dept out there but much more need to be done whether it is tackling situation like mob control, safety & security, handling of criminal cases, and lot more. Discipline & winning public trust is most important. Police in general do not interact and communicate with people, instead they create fear this need to change. I am saying this with my experience as a small time Law Enforcement Officer in NJ. Hope in the years to come, it will improve.

All the safety wear and instruments looks like new and one more thing we can notice here there are no big stomach police personals.

Any way looks like improvement in district. One thing should be importantly improve is the way how police should use their tongue and body language.

Without saying boli#^ga their day do not start and without taking bribe their day do not end.

Please dear SP teach them to cooperate with people so people can cooperate with police.

I don’t write just for the sake of getting “agree” marks. Whether you like it or not but always write the truth or reality only. And most important is here in this forum many times you get more “Disagree” than “Agree” because I hope you know it well and understood also!!!! You want more “Agree” marks? Then praise your CONGiss, Italian Mam & Pappu and you see the results!!!!

Much appreciated demonstration. In developed couturiers these kind of drills are conducted regularly to keep the police force active. Similarly general public need to be educated about fire fighting drills, which is very important for those who are living in High Rise Buildings.

Dear Mukesh, do you think SRS, BD, RSS , SS are patriotic organizations who sacrificed for independence of India. YOu are totally wrong. Jan Sangh leaders were informers of British and they collaborated with them. RSS / BD/ SRS etec are anti nationals and terrorists. They are worshiping of killer of Mahatma Gandhi. What a shame. you people have no right to stay in India. If you have no respect in the Father of Nation and Indian constitution, why are you still in India. YOu better go to Pakistan who will invite you with garlands.
