15 killed in Kenya floods

Nairobi, April 30 (IANS): At least 15 people were killed and six others missing in flash floods that hit Kenya's Narok county, some 100 km from the capital Nairobi, after heavy rain pounded the region on Tuesday night.

Narok county commissioner Arthur Osiya said on Wednesday that rescue operations have been called off due to the rain, expressing fears that the toll could rise, Xinhua news agency reported.

Police and Red Cross Society were among the rescue teams trying to find the victims.

Several vehicles were swept away, buildings partially flooded and several roads connecting the county with neighbouring areas were cut off temporarily.

Property worth millions of Kenyan shillings were destroyed.

The meteorological department has warned that heavy rain will continue in May, urging Kenyans to remain alert.
