Mangaluru: GPS made mandatory in school, college vehicles

Mangaluru, Apr 30: The Regional Transport Authority (RTA), in a meeting held on Thursday April 30, made it mandatory for all school and college vehicles in Dakshina Kannada district to install GPS (global positioning system).

The order has been issued in view of boosting safety of students in schools and colleges across the district and to curb harassment by school/college drivers.

It may be recalled that in March, a minor girl was sexually assaulted allegedly by the driver of her school van while he was dropping her back home from school.

Hence, all educational institutions, both schools and colleges, have been ordered to install GPS in their registered vehicles with immediate effect in the presence of an authorized vehicle inspector. Also, the heads of all educational institutions are required to personally visit the RTA and ensure that all documents related to their institutions' vehicles are in order.

The educational institutions have been given time till May end to install the GPS in their vehicles. Those who fail to do so will face action under IPC Section 188 and other disciplinary action as decided by the authority concerned.

    GPS to Sand trucks is over. Sand smuggling is as usual and Officials of Mining getting Rich by the LOAD. Now GPS to school and College Buses in Mangalore. Karavali College Drivers may not like it because they love to speed through Neermarga to Padu College carrying Students on foot boards.
    This is almost like Criminal Monitoring the Jail Inmates.
    Mr Ibrahim,DC of Mangalore is very alert and comes up with good ideas for the betterment of Society. But no one cares at all,as Elected Officials are corrupt along with Govt.Employees. For example:He gave a speech sometime back regarding Builders and Contractors using footpaths and walkways. He told them strictly not to use them. I have called His office many time regarding this problem and they informed MCC officials regarding this. But until today not a single problem was solved because Town Planning is hand in hand with Builders.

    What about rickshaws? In Karnataka primary students transportation mainly rickshaws . They should be monitored with some kind of scanning system

    What is the use of gps it can locate only vehicles route of travelling.whether any person is there to monitor it in all schools.its better to make CCTV mandatory if any incidents hapnd it can be recorded.

    RTA's move is appreciated but it should ensure PARAMANU should be installed every school bus.


    Sad part is RTA is not interested in monitoring vehicle fitness of some old goods and passenger vehicle which are plying in the roads on daily basis.Either there is break light or signal lights roadworthy vehicles some instances.In DK districts there are more deaths due to reckless drive,driving with out license or DUI reasons but RTA seems not amused by the rate of accidents.Time is ripe for RTA to implement it's own rules in roads and few days back WEARING SEAT BELT WHILE WHEEL IN MANGALORE made mandatory but only two -three days very strict and now business is as usual!!!Therefore,RTA or POLICE department need to be strict on GPS or other motor vehicle rules.
