Jammu-Srinagar highway closed

Jammu, May 2 (IANS): The traffic on the strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed as a section of the road caved in on Saturday, officials said.

A senior traffic department official told IANS that a section of the highway has caved in at Peeda, 135 km from here in Ramban district on Saturday.

"A section of the Jammu-Srinagar highway has caved in at Peeda today (Saturday) morning," the official said.

"Traffic on the highway has been halted as road restoration work is going on at the damaged portion of the road. Traffic was scheduled to move from Jammu to Srinagar today (Saturday)".

The authorities have been allowing only one-way traffic on the highway that serves lifeline for the landlocked valley.

Portions of the highway have been hit by landslides at Magarkote, Nasri, Peeda and a number of other places during the last two months.
