Home minister seeks report on use of cops as orderlies

Bengaluru, May 6 (DHNS): Home Minister K J George on Tuesday said he would seek a report from DG&IGP Om Prakash on the use of police constables as orderlies by senior IPS officers.

Reacting to questions raised over police personnel being made to wash clothes and clean the homes of senior IPS officers, George said the system had been in vogue for a long time now.

The DG&IGP would convene a meeting of senior IPS officers to discuss alternatives to using policemen as orderlies. One alternative was to bring in a system of followers, which is in place in the KSRP.

“Wherever the KSRP battalion moves, we have people who wash clothes and cook food following them,” he said.

He said the DG&IGP had been asked to submit a report in this regard in the next three months.

George said the government had promoted 1,900 KSRP personnel.

“Some of these personnel have been promoted after 25 years of service. If they were in other police wings, they would have got the promotions earlier. This is a morale booster for the KSRP personnel,” he said. George said the 1,900 promotions would cost the department an additional Rs two crore per year.

On the transfer of personnel from executive posts in Bengaluru City, George said most of these personnel who had served as inspectors or ACPs for more than five years were being transferred to special teams like the CCB or CID. The minister said the delay in the disbursal of free rations to police personnel had been rectified.

“I do not agree that distribution of rations had stopped for the police personnel. It was just a slowdown, as there were a few procedural lapses,” he said.

DG&IGP Om Prakash said the department had already held a meeting with the Food and Civil Supplies department and had been promised the release of rice for the police personnel.

“An amount of Rs 27 crore has been allocated and deposited with the Food and Civil Supplies department,” he said.
