Mangaluru: Unprecedented - MCC commissioner gets gunman

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (CLP)

Mangaluru, May 6: In an unprecedented move, the commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Hephsiba Rani Korlapati has been given a gunman for her security.

Korlapati has been facing the ire of corporators across party lines, who have been demanding her transfer. They have time and again alleged that she is not responding to the needs of the people and showing highhandedness in interacting with MCC members. Some of them had even met chief minister Siddaramaiah during his recent visit to the city and urged him to transfer her, but it is learnt that he turned down their demand.

The corporators had also alleged that the commissioner does not allow them to meet her without prior appoinment, and she had issued notice to an attender for allowing people inside when meetings were going on. Korlapati in her defense had said that she was unhappy with the working of the corporators and was not getting their cooperation in carrying out development works.

The MCC commissioner, in a letter to the city police commissioner dated April 22 had asked that she be provided a gunman so that she could carry out her official duties without any problems.

It is learnt that based on her request, the police department provided a gunman to her a few days ago. This is the first time in history that an MCC commissioner has been given gunman for security.

Responding to the issue, Kannur BJP corporator Sudheer told daijiworld, "This is really unfortunate. It is very sad to see that MCC commissioner feels threatened. She may have some fears. It has never happened before in the history of Mangaluru. The commissioner and the mayor are two faces of the same coin and should work together for Mangaluru's development. It is sad to see that there is misunderstanding, and it is people who will suffer. Everyone should come together and find a solution."

Asked since when the MCC commissioner has been given gunman, he said it was from the very next day of CM's visit to the city.

Hanumanth Kamath of Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi came out in strong support of the commissioner and said, "The commissioner has been working as per the law, but MLAs and corporators are trying to create disturbance. There is too much pressure on her and hence she might have requested for security. It will give her protection and create fear in the opposition.

"If she really has a threat to life then it is okay to have a gunman, but at the same time, it is a shame that an efficient officer is forced to have a gunman. It shows that Mangaluru is not ready for efficient officers yet. This should not have happened," he added.

No threat to life: MCC commissioner

Speaking at a meeting of the MCC here on Wednesday May 6, commissioner Korlapati denied reports of threat to life. "I have received no threat to my life, but I felt the need for having a gunman, so I placed the request with the city police commissioner S Murugan on April 22 in a letter. I am thankful to the police commissioner for providing the gunman."

Asked if there was any specific reason for the request, she said that there was a boys' hostel next to her house. "I had already raised the compound wall of my house as there is a boys' hostel next to it. Now I feel secure both at work and in my house."

Correct. Some of these corporators think that they are great politicians .Some of them are not even educated adequately. They should fix an appointment time with the commissioner to discuss important matters and not barge into her office as if they are the Lords of the city.

When people demand extension of services of honest officials, govt. never obliges, whereas when goonda politicians demand transfer of honest officials so that they can hide their dirty business, govt. quickly reacts!!

It is very clear that she is for the people. We should thank that we have such a commissioner. Politicians of all parties are the same. They want 'their'job done.
I would rather plead her not to give up her strong discipline based administration.

MCC commissioner gets gunman-first time in the history. But it is quite obviously required under the present scenario. Because the corrupt officials, who have been enjoying all these days with their corrupt practice, are now feeling unsecured under the current able, educated, clean and transparent, efficient commissioner.
She is straight forward and has got some vision, logic behind her administration to clean the administration and weed out corrupt officials, corruption in the MCC.This is not in line with the taste of present corporators of the same party and hence demanding her transfer and creating problems in discharging her efficient duties.
This is how our MCC is working and what is MCC.They don't want an efficient and dynamic commissioner, who can work for the betterment of our beloved city Mangaluru and its citizens. They want only their corrupt officials, show offs and filthy corrupt ideas and enjoy their age old freedom of harassing the public in order to get their share of commission.
But this iron, non-corrupt, efficient, dynamic lady does not like all these dramas and is under the mission of "SWATCH MCC administration" ALONG WITH SWATCH BHARAT MISSION. Providing gunman to the commissioner under the current scenario is the right decision by the concerned in the best interest of her safety. Hands of all the corporators are tied up now. She is an efficient, able, dynamic leader to give transparent administration but how long we are fortunate to have this efficient commissioner, God only knows. All the citizens of this city should unite together and support this clean and transparent administration and see that this commissioner is not transferred at any cost and under any circumstance.Jai Hind, Jai Karnataka.

All corrupt corporators who enjoyed throughout their carrier feel threatened & want the Commissioner to get transfered, what is this logic? If they really feel they can't work under her let them resign. They will not resign because they want to enjoy & work as per their wish. There are plenty of people in India who can work hard under any critical circumstances. If you have the will to work for the public, you can work under any conditions. Don't tranfer the commissoner, public will rise again if transferred.

The people of this city have to decide whom they want - an upright and efficient commissioner who is interested in the welfare of the place or corrupt corporators who are only interested in feathering their nests. Remember, we get only what we deserve. Let us all join together and throw a spanner in the designs of these rogue corporators.

Let we all mangaloreans unite and see to that the commissioner is not transferred, stays in Mangalore and the development works continue. It is to be noted that the complaints against her are only from the corporators and not from the general public. The general public is happy with her work and it is better for Mangalore and the Mangaloreans, if she continues. It is a known truth that She is doing good works in the city and not allowing the corporators to take money These corporators wants to loot the city coffers and the commissioner is not allowing them to do it. The grouse of the corporators is that they are not allowed to see her without appointment. This is a common protocol. The commissioner is in a responsible position and it is just that nobody disrupt her schedule. Madam we are with you. Wake up all mangaloreans and stop these looters. If we do not stand up this time for a just and honest officer, we will never stand up again and will allow the rein of the corrupt looters to continue freely.

If a bodygurad is given an MCC commissioner, who will protect normal people? Does a public servant need a gunman's service. Rather use the gunman to huntdown on goonda's and Molesters and encounter them.

Being educated and matured we have to support these kind of non corrupt and straight forward nature govt officer's instead of any politicians from any party,
Here in India our politicians from root level to higher think that they are supreme, they are above the law, they can do any thing as they like,This trend should be abolished and,we need to change these mind setup of our politicians.
