Bantwal, May 7: Historian, Prof T Murugesh, has opined that mud formations recovered from Kedige near Allipade in the taluk a few days back must be stone edicts that are thousands of years old.

A team from the Antiques Collection and Research Centre visited the spot where these relics were found, on Wednesday May 6. Two of the shapes found are made from alluvial soil that has been exposed to fire. One of them happens to be an edict with a shape of deceased pregnant woman, while the other is a pot with shapes of lamps, he said.

The form of female is depicted to be having a raised stomach with clothes covering portions of the legs above knees. The toes and palms are shaped like having been pressed. The hand that looks like like having been extended, and head which appears tilted upwards are the other features, which make one to conclude that it is a form of deceased pregnant woman, Prof Murugesh explained. He also thinks that the spot where these items were found may be a graveyard, and the shape of a pregnant woman may symbolize grave of the woman, he felt.

He said that in the past, the practice of leaving behind a pot filled with grains with a lamp above the pot was in vogue, and the pot found now resembles this kind of pot. Founder director of the centre, Prof S A Krishnaiah, and research student, Subhash, were in the team.
