Udupi: 'Gift' proves costly, woman loses Rs 46 lac to foreigner

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (RJP)

Udupi, May 7: Falling prey to online frauds is not a new thing. It happens on an everyday basis. Metilda Hilda D’Souza from Perampalli in Udupi district has lost around Rs 46 lacs in a 'gift' fraud. She has lodged a police complaint in this regard at Manipal police station.

Metilda was working in Israel when a person named Taylor Mike introduced himself to her through Facebook. Taylor told her through a Facebook message that he had paid for a Christmas gift for her which would arrive through Royal Express.

Metilda then received a phone call as well as a mail claiming to be from Royal Express, asking her to pay US $ 900 for the clearance of the parcel. Metilda deposited the amount into the account specified through Money Gram from Israel. Taylor Mike again demanded cash and Metilda obliged by sending US$ 2800 and $3700 to the account of a person named Nelly Wayne.

When Metilda came to India, again she received a phone call demanding Rs 1,40,000 relating to the same issue. She deposited the same into an account belonging to one Augustine Dee. The incident repeated later also.

The complainant claims in the police complaint that she sent a total of Rs 46 lacs in hope of getting the 'gift'.

Manipal police have registered a case under Sections (A) 66(D) and 66(C) of Information Technology Act 2008 and Section 420 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

There sure is much more to this story than meets the eye and the 'victims' version of the story that she simply gave away so much money just for a 'gift' the nature of which is not cited!! this is most "BAKWAAS" case..will anyone pay for "GIFT".whats the meaning of gift?.even the hyper-idiots wont pay single paise what is so clearly game of cheat.paying 46lac for "GIFT" is criminal act.and mrs.metilda is entirely responsible for this.while buying 50rs fish these argue endlessly & here she threw away lakhs just like that,on a guy whom she never seen!!!...WOW!..no offense but actually police should not find the cheat instead put this woman in jail for allowing this type of crime to happen.

What type of "gift" she was expecting from an unknown and unseen person that made her to pay at will? Did she expect crores of Rupees worth gift to spend 46 lakhs? Does she have a thing called common sense? A proverb in Kannada "ati aase gati kedisitu" rightly fits her.

Matilda, don't worry. There are many women did just like you.
Women can fool easily to sweetest words of men/others. As i read media everyday, i am thinking it is easy to fool majority(not all) of women. Not only in money or gifts in almost everything.
Matilda, Did you ask before you transfer first money gram $900 to Taylor Mike with your husband, kids or who ever close to you? I am thinking answer is NO.
This is where human making mistake.specially girls. many girls meet boys on social network or anywhere, but they closely get impress by his sweet words, and one day after everything happens. when he slowly slip from her, then he raped and all those blames.. question is..did she told her parents or brother or sisters, or husband that i met some one and ask them to talk with him too. they don't want to make this way. finally it is same like Taylor Mike. somebody getting benefits of others stupidity.
This is not the last one. There are many Matilda to be fooled in due course.!!!!!

Recent past there were mails that huge amount of money like millions of dollars in someone's account who died, if we wish they will take a share. If we respond to them they will say there are basic formalities so they need small amount to get it cleared. If we fall prey to these spam mails, victim will start remitting money and there is no end.
Once same mail came to my colleague, so my friend told him you deduct this amount from total amount and remit the balance
There are many stories, once one person said that he has land cruzier in Mauritius and he want to sell it only for US$15000/- and also there was a nice photo of vehicle. To get this we have to send him 50% advance. But we told him we have LC facility, we will send him a LC and after he ship the vehicle we will clear the payment thru our bank
    He disappeared
Atleast she should have discussed the matter with some one before remitting the funds
